looking after Lemon and Orange trees here in spain,
by Lindadessex » Sat Aug 21, 2021 11:52 am
Hello
I^ve just joined today and I need some advice on how to look after my Lemon and orange trees,
I only have one of each and they are both in a pot.
The soil is dry and i´ve just come back from being away for a few days to find all the leaves on the orange tree have been eaten and part of the lemon tree too.
I have been told by one person don´t water too oftern or the other person say water regularly,
I really am at a loss.
Can someone advise.
thank you

Citrus trees in pots need more watering than those in the ground. But only water them when the soil starts to dry out. If you water them too much, it stops the oxygen getting to the roots and causes root rot which will dry out the leaves and leave them prone to fungus.
Water when the first few inches of soil is dry but also check the sides of the soil as water can get trapped there. Regular forking of the soil will distribute the water evenly. Then, when it all seems to be drying, will it be OK to water them. This does need to be done on a regular basis.
Also make sure there is good drainage in the pot. Water doesn't spread so much in pots as it does when planted in the ground and can simply sit on the bottom as another cause of root rot.

Agree with all above, we bought an orange tree in May and water every other day but in this heat around one abd a half litres every second day...if the leaves start to curl it needs water.

If you’re going to be away for a while consider a timed irrigation system to water your tree’s although this means leaving your water connected.
Alternatively you can buy absorbable pellets that slowly release water into the soil.
