French bailiffs have grounded a Ryanair plane and all its passengers in Bordeaux following a row over unpaid debts.
The Boeing 737 belonging to the Irish budget airline was due to head off to London on Thursday evening, but officials from the Charente department won a court order preventing it from moving.
"It was stopped at Bordeaux Airport, so preventing 149 passengers from travelling," said a local source.
"They were all due to go to Stansted Airport, but instead were held up for five hours before taking another plane."
The Charente officials claim that Ryanair owes them the equivalent of just over £450,000.
This debt relates to French subsidies paid to Ryanair to provide flights from Angouleme, the capital of the Charente department, to London between 2008 and 2009.

The European Commission has since claimed the subsidies were illegal, and ordered Ryanair to pay them all back.
Around half have since been paid, and the £450,000 figures represents the remainder, said the source.
French airport official Didier Villat told Sud Ouest newspaper: "To my knowledge it's the first time a Ryanair plane has been seized in this way.

Yes, about time too. He may be giving lots of people cheap flights but he is also an absolute pain in the u know what. The staff are ignorant, the new ‘check in yourself’ is ridiculous, a bit like diy check out at Alcampo. The ‘assistant’ there would not help a very elderly couple to lift their case onto the conveyor belt. I did for them.....and I am 68. Actually, I felt sorry for her having to work for such a company. Not to mention queueing up at Manchester on the tarmac in the rain to board....long queue to board because people were trying to swap seats thanks to rottenair’s new policy of grabbing more money by seating families apart....and people soaked through with the rain and having to travel like that ........and after being delayed yet again and stopped and had your bag searched for illegal booze. Then desperatly needing a G n T to be told we only have ******* gin (twice the price) and oh no, sorry, we have no ice and the tonic is a bit warm. Stress? I hope our little Irish friend is feeling stress tonight.

that's not ryanairs fault that people were swapping seats that left others boarding in the rain ,that's the passengers fault for not paying to sit together surely! cheap n cheerful ,you do have a choice of who to fly with,jet2 ,easyjet, and others, they sometimes board you off the tarmac as well, and if you cant go 2 -3 hrs without a G&t , well say no more,

Have always used Ryanair and have had no problems with them, you know exactly what you are paying. All airlines charge for seats but just in different ways. If you don’t like Ryanair don’t use them, simple.

I am sure the people on the above flight knew what they were getting... same as the half million that booked with them and the flights were cancelled...
You can work the system, do everything right, but Ryan Air can still cock-up your flights..and seem to do regularly...
Still, everyone to their own.....

I'm not a fan of Ryanair but it seems a little unfair that the French government, who paid the "illegal" subsidies to attract the airline, are befitting from their illegal activity.
Perhaps it would better if the EU fined the French government the total amount of subsidies paid during this period.

we would never use Ryanair again due to the fact that we were charged twice for the same flight. We booked on line through Ryanair as usual but received a confirmation from OPODO which we had never heard about and also one from Ryanair charging different prices. OPODO apparantly is an agent for Ryanair. It has taken 5 months of phone calls, e-mails, proof of payment with OPODO and they have just admitted that Ryanair were wrong to make the charge and a refund is due in ten days! watch this space! This has made us think that Ryanair is very unreliable so back to other airlines.
