All depends upon the OP requirements,do they need lots of data ? 3gb is enough for me as connected to a router much of the time, it may not be enough for you though ?
And how do either of us know how this family use their phones, I was offering one option, no need for your usual clever dickery is there ?

Virgin mobile, which maybe owned by O2 now, don’t charge for roaming in Europe, there maybe limits but I’ve never reached them. Most people have Wi-Fi and that’s what I use most of the time, the only time I used the phone data is for satnav in the car and checking the odd thing while out and about which doesn’t use much data. While on holiday it gives the opportunity to use the mobile less and just enjoy the holiday for what it is, I’m of an age that we didn’t have a phone in the house let alone in your pocket and it was never a problem and we still went on holiday, maybe not as far away as nowadays:~).

When I’m out at shopping, retail centres I log onto the free wi-fi that is usually available.

Google the money saving expert site,special offer til I think March 9th,sim only contract with lebara,99p a month for 6 mths. Then £4.99 a month for next 6 mths. 3 GB.data unlimited calls & texts in UK & Europe plus 100 mins.calls to EU from UK.

All a bit academic as O2 aren't introducing roaming charges. Still, good opportunity for an anti Brexit rant at the outset.

Oh, and if the whole family can't do without their comfort blankets for a break, they would all have to take out contracts and then inform all those back home of the new numbers or they wouldn't get any calls.

Bring back the days when a postcard would keep you in touch and people actually talked to each other when they went out.

EE have a roaming add on that extends UK packages to the EU for £10 per month. We just switch that on and off when we 're here and is much better than the £2 per day charge!

Check out the other posts from the OP, and you'll see there's a common thread, along with a non-friendly tone towards certain members of the UK population.

It's been reported.

The same non-friendly term used could probably be used for those folk who don't seek out the better mobile deals. There are a fair few providers who aren't introducing roaming charges - so it's clearly something specific providers are choosing to rip off their customers with, as opposed to something which is mandatory due to the B word.

Roaming is simply not a necessity.
4 of us have just been around the Far East for 22 days, 5 countries.

We all switched off roaming so as to avoid unnecessary charges, but never had a problem with WiFi.

All hotels and hostels provide free access. Virtually every bar, restaurant and coffee shop also offered free access, plus each airport has free access. Even small shops and certainly the big shopping centres had free WiFi.

If you're in your house and the internet is down, it can be handy for those who don't have a Spanish mobile plan with data.

Agreed its not a necessity, per se...but then again, neither is a mobile phone, to some.
