The comedians on ITV
Re: Alf Garnet

When I was watching this stuff in my early teens the content didn’t seem appropriate, and thankfully society has moved-on to the point where most people seem to agree.
To me, Alf Garnet was a misogynistic, racist bully and not at all funny or entertaining.

I think, it may finds both the S word terms referred to as deeply hurtful and very offensive. In future, please use the term "manually operated, gender neutral, piece of earth moving equipment"

I think the intention of the writer of the original TV series " Til death us do part" was precisely to highlight how obnoxious the expressed views of the Alf Garnet character was. He wasn't cast as a 'hero' but as a deluded, pathetic caricature. You weren't supposed to be laughing with Alf Garnet, but at him and anyone who held such views.

How many millions used to watch and laugh at Benny Hill? Now they won’t even show repeats on tv. Was it all harmless fun or something offensive?

While we shouldn't judge everything in the past by the standards of today- There are many things that were on Tv in the past that are cringe-worthy now. Watch some of those magazine 'Tv in the 1970s', Tv in the 1980s' etc programmes and your jaw might drop at the stuff that was on TV that wouldn't happen now.
But Benny Hill was always crude, sexist slapstick . It wasn't funny then and it isn't funny now....

Some people are very deluded on here, political correctness has gone mad, you politically correct people are just too scared to say what you really think any more. It's a sad world we live in today.

that was the whole point of my original post costalad. It was just a bit of fun. I’m overweight, but I still laugh at ‘fat bloke’ jokes. Why? Because sometimes it’s just funny.

Benny Hill not funny - my point is it used to top the ratings - millions watched his shows. It must have been funny - but now “humour” has changed, as undoubtably it will again in another 20 years. Shows that have stood the test of time - Eric Sykes. Morecambe and wise, and of course Stan and Ollie !
