When Did Actresses Become Actors?

When Did Actresses Become Actors?

Postby marcliff » Fri Sep 13, 2019 5:33 pm

So, purely off topic (and I know I shouldn't start a sentence with so but I do it because some people get annoyed) when exactly did the English language change and, among others, actresses suddenly become actors?

When did a heroine become a hero? Or comediennes become comedians?
More pertinently, why did they change?
A man being honoured by the Queen becomes a Knight and a woman becomes a Dame. That hasn't changed and, come to think of it, it's still a Queen doing it and not the all encompassing "Ruler".

Why is Princess Eugenie not being called Prince? If that makes sense then how come JK Rowling is referred to as an author and not an authoress?

Were these changes done overnight, as if someone suddenly clicked on a light and said "Hey, we aren't allowed to differentiate anymore"? Or was it done creepingly, as in over time to lull us all into an acceptance?

More importantly, is is just cos I is gettin' old?

It's all this gender rubbish and equality. A total load of rubbish if you ask me.

When I was doing my degree (not that long ago)... we were told to watch our language.. for instance a "manhole cover" was to be referred to an "inspection cover" from now on..

..does it matter?.. I don´t really know..

When I was discussing words with a visiting British model who works in local government, I told her that most Spanish words have male & female versions - eg chico(M)/chica(F), hijo(M)/hija(F) etc. - whereas model doesn't (modelo) and one would think was masculine & artist (artista) which one would think was feminine.
She replied that they would all be changed of course to become gender neutral.
Well maybe in UK, but I don't think so in Spain.
I know its a pain at first trying to remember if a car is male or female - ELcoche - or chair - LA silla - but can't see that changing in near future.
