Any problems relocating with staffordshire bull terriers?

Postby cheflady » Thu Jan 29, 2015 4:06 pm

Hi everyone. We are hoping to come live in Spain next year and wanted to know if we will encounter any problems relocating with this breed of dog. If he is allowed could anybody tell me a price for third party insurence for him. Thanx

not 100% sure but think they are classed as a dangerous breed over here, and need a special licence, or so I am told. best check with police.

Yes, they are classed as "potentially dangerous dogs". They have to undergo a psychological test at a vets, be registered with the town hall and be on a lead with muzzle at all times. It also needs to be insured against 3rd party damages. You need to provide the vet with a copy of the pet passport and immunisation record. They are not allowed to be taken into park areas with child facilities.
You also need to provide a map of where the dog will be kept showing access points and ensure gates are covered if someone can put a hand through (the police actually do come and check this).
The breeds covered as potentially dangerous are doberman (but not in all regions), Pitbull terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Braseiro, Tosa inu and Akita Inu. Dogs over 25kg. Crossbreeds of those breeds are also on the list.
Other dogs with some characteristics are also classed a potentially dangerous.

There are other breeds which are prohibited completely.

Not entirely sure that crossbreeds of those breeds mentioned have to go to the lengths mentioned. We have a staffy crossbreed we have had from a puppy and is now approx 6 years old and our vet has never said we had to do any of the above. I would definitely check with a vet first.

I should imagine it would depend more on the weight and the amount of cross breeding. Must admit, the vets do seem a bit laid back about all this as if they don't agree with the actual law. The ones I have listed are what is actually laid down in the Real Decreto but it does seem as if the vets interpret it their own way.

Hi, We have a staffy and have lived here for 3 years. We are registered with a vet and he has never asked for letter from the police. We take him everywhere and have seen the police on many occassions and they have never asked us about him. The only time he had to wear a muzzel was on the boat coming over, when all dogs did.

You should have no problems, register with a vet and the vet will do the transfer of the microchip information to your new address for you. Then you have to register the dog with the town hall in Rojales. I can't remember what it cost me , but it wasn't expensive. You get a credit card size licence in the post a couple of weeks later, with your NIE and passport info on it, along with the dogs name and microchip number and address. It is advisable to have the dog vaccinated against heart worm and leishmaniasis. Dogs have to be kept on a lead all the time over here, I always carry a muzzle with me but have not been asked to put it on the dog, I have a German Shepherd. Beaches are not dog friendly, I used to take my dog to the beach for a run early in the morning until I got stopped by a police patrol and warned I would be fined if I was seen on the beach with my dog again! If you are going to be living in Quesada I can recommend the vet clinic in C/Av Costa Azul, next to Jollys Bar.
