How have your dogs adjusted to life in Spain from UK?

Postby Alisongrahame » Sat Jun 01, 2013 5:06 pm

In July this year I am coming to Spain for 6 weeks, and am brining my two small doggies with me.
I am in the process of sorting their passports. They have just had their rabies jab and I was talking to the vet about other preventative medication for them. Sand fly and heart worm were the other issues she mentioned.
My query is with you guys who have your pets with you, how have they managed adjusting from the uk to Spain, have they suffered with any foreign ailments?
With so many vets can you recommend any local to the lo marabu area?

Thanks for reading

Hi

We drive down for six weeks in the summer with our two dogs. They settle in very quickly and adapt to a much slower pace of life. It's too hot to take them running with us or going on long walks but that doesn't seem to bother them. They're happy with a short walk early evening. We've never had any illnesses whilst we've been in Quesada. For the health check that is required for the re-entry into the UK we use the vets located in the old CAM bank near Consum in Lo Marabu. They're excellent!!

We bought our dogs over last year. They adjusted straight away, they loved it. We used to take them out really early and late evenings. We are coming out in July for 6 weeks and they are coming with us again. We used the vets In Urb El Raso for there passports to get stamped. I think they charged 10 euro's each. He was very nice.

This is the second time we have brought our dogs over and they'd settle quickly and know to lie in the shade. We also walk them early morning and evening when it is cooler. We also used the vet at consum who was excellent.

Last year we used euro tunnel and it was excellent for the dogs. We took an overnight ferry this time but was more traumatic for the dogs because they did not want to do anything in a large car litter tray so will go back via the tunnel again. It is so quick and dog walking areas at each end.

Thanks for all your knowledge and information, am a little bit worried for them, but its been nice to read that yours have all been over for about 6 weeks to and have coped, and not been unwell. Will definitely try the one near consumer I did pop in there in May and it had a nice vibe, although I was a little upset with the 2 dogs in cages for sale, but that's just me.

Hello

I have a staffordshire bull terrier and I am moving to Spain (Quesada area) in the next couple of months. I would like any info about which way is better to take him via France and the euro tunnel or on the overnight night ferry to Santander. I have heard a few stories that France do not like these dogs and am a bit worried if I go via France they will be funny about him. I know he needs a muzzle and he has got a passport and had a rabies jab. He is 10 years old but still very excitable, anyone with a staffy would know. Just any info would be great. Thanks

hi stepclayton i also had a staffie for 4 year in spain and under spanish law staffies must be registered with the local town hall and separate liability insurance is a must as under spanish regulations staffies are classed as dangerous dogs..... also as you said they must be muzzled at all times outwith your property. and take it from me the insurance is really expensive as ours had to be insured for no less than 100 thousand euro. and our staffie was as soft and friendly with everyone, but its the law im afriad

Thanks Shirlie Anne yes I did see I need to get insurance and go for some kind of medical which is fine. Its funny they look more dangerous when they have the muzzle on. How did you get your dog to spain? did you go by boat or the euro tunnel? Thanks

Hi stepsclayton,

I would definitely say the tunnel for dogs, it is stree free for them with an enclosed play area when you check in and being in the car with you for such a short space of time, they are more than happy. We have always used hotels in England, France and Spain on the way down from travel lodges to 'posh' and only rarely do hotels not take dogs. We are setting off back to Spain again in a couple of days via Switzerland and Monaco and no problems getting dogs in hotels in the busy season.

Good luck with your move.
