Staffordshire Bull Terriers

Staffordshire Bull Terriers

Postby Staffiez » Wed Feb 15, 2017 1:48 pm

Hi All

I know you have a number of questions about this but i can't find the information i'm looking for. Can you please help?

We are at the very start of looking to moving to Spain and the first problem we have hit is the question about Staffies.
I know we need to apply for a special licence to bring them but where do i start still being in the UK?

I've read we need to have a solid destination first and also we need an address we are going to be living so Police can check but we don't know yet because if my babies get turned away, we don't go.
I've read we have to apply in Spain not the UK but how can we do that? Some say start at the Vets/Police others say get the passport sorted first.

I'm so confused, Please can you tell me in easy step by step how to apply as i'd never re-home my babies so this is the most important part for us.

Thank you kindly
xxx

Hi Staffiez,

Firstly, you need to get a pet passport this can be obtained from your vet and they will also need their rabies injections and anything else your vet advises on it's pretty straight forward. I would advise to get them chipped as well.

Then you can bring them to Spain. I moved to Spain 2 years ago and bought my Bullmastiff over (there was no way I was leaving him in the UK!).

I got a pet transport company to bring him over and it only took a few days before he arrived. As he is classed as a dangerous breed I did have to take out public liability, gain a dog licence and loads of other stuff which was hard work. But I think your staffies should be ok and won't need anything like this apart from a dog licence I think. However, you can find out what dogs are on the dangerous dogs list in Spain just by googling it but I'm sure staffies aren't listed.

I never had to inform the police I was bringing my dog over either.

Once you get them here you'll need to register them with a vet who will register them on their system take a copy of their passport and passport numbers plus their chip number. All pretty easy tbh.

I hope this has been of some use to you to get you started.

Good luck with your move.

Having had a staffie in Spain we found that they are classed as a dangerous breed as decreed by the government in 1999,therefore public liability has to be taken out through an insurance company.Good luck with your move.

Hiya
Yes it is correct that Staffs are considered dangerous here in Spain. i have had mine with me here for over 5 years and never had a problem.
You may have to fit a muzzle if you are taking them out into public places though.
I brought mine over on the ferry overnight into santander and drove down , also note that dogs cannot be in the front seat of a car they need to be restrained either in a pet cage in the rear if a hatch back / estate or with a harness attached to the seat belt if a saloon.
Hope this helps

Spain
The Royal decree of 2002 entered restrictions on dog breeds such as:
1.American Pitbull Terrier
2.American Staffordshire Terrier
3.Dogo Argentino
4.English Bull Terrier
5.Staffordshire Bull Terrier
6.Rottweiler
7.Akita inu
8.Fila Brasileiro (Brazilian Mastiff)
9.Tosa Inu
In order to obtain a license for the housing of these breeds its owner must be of a legal age, have no criminal records, be mentally and physically healthy, as well as get liability insurance for a total of 120 000 euros.
It might also be helpful to read the info on here http://www.idealspain.com/Pages/Informa ... abroad.htm Good luck it might seem complicated but its not that difficult.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier on holiday

Postby Cal » Mon Sep 24, 2018 9:15 am

Hi, We would like to come on holiday from UK to Spain next year and tour with our caravan, we have a rescue Staffordshire Bull Terrier, he has no pedigree papers but we do have his passport and letter from our vets confirming he breed and he is microchipped. He has been to France using these. My question is can we bring him to Spain on holiday and if so what arrangements and additional paperwork do we need please?
