house exchange

Postby winktype » Mon Dec 10, 2018 11:09 am

Hello all in Quesada!
We have visited Quesada several times now and have decided this is where we would like to retire to in the next 18 months. We currently live in France in the Charente region where we own a beautiful 3 bed house and intend to put this on the market in the springtime. Just a thought, is there anyone there that would be interested in a house exchange? This is a serious enquiry, so please no silly comments.

Thanks,

Rob

Some years ago I put a property onto an exchange site as the people running an estate agency decided to change course & asked me,as I knew them,if I would try this instead of selling.Of course,it was popular in UK amongst council tenants but now is also being used as an alternative with private houses.Indeed there are other european nationals operating such sites as well.I thought about relocating to France before I came to Quesada but prefer Normandy but I may well rejoin an exchange site as I am unsure if I shall remain here.I must say I had some interesting requests, all over from Sweden to Cyprus even though I was, from a town in north of costa blanca,to somewhere else in Spain. So give it a try .

Hello, thank you for the information. We have already considered and looked at a few 'property exchange' sites, but I think our requirements are too specific, to actually find a suitable property through one of these in the exact location, is like threading a needle..... We know this is a (very) long shot, but you never know, there may be someone on Quesada (or close) that for whatever reason wants to re-locate, or maybe someone with a holiday home there that fancies a change? If we sell our house quickly, then we will be heading down soon anyway.

Hello, for us, it is the winter that is the problem, spring/summer/autumn in the Charente, you could not wish to be anywhere else, but the winter! It is however not quite that simple for us, logic tells us to rent in the winter, but we have 2 dogs, which proves a problem for some owners, plus in our old(er) age, we like to have our own stuff around us, we have stayed in many properties for a week or two, but would we want to stay longer term, probably not, we like our particular own creature comforts. We have considered buying a property just for the winter, but having owned 2 properties in 2 different countries before do not wish to go down that route again.

Mike T, have you looked at "house swaps"? If you want to exchange for a time, rather than a permanent deal, there are many sites for this.

Hi Mike, yes, but most folk want to swap for the summer, can't see anyone wanting to swap for winter, unless of course there is a lot of that white stuff and some big daft mountain to hurtle down!

Hi Rob we did a house exchange in UK when we wanted to downsize. It's so much easier than all the palaver of buying/selling chatted to a neighbour about our plans and she had a friend who wanted to live in our road. We got in touch went to see their smaller house and swopped a couple of months after. It was cheaper as we had no estate agent fees and it freed up some much needed cash. Good luck with your move to lovely Quesada!

But you don't have the 10% transfer tax on property in UK like you have here. That would still have to be paid on the Hacienda valuation regardless if any money changes hands.
