On a similar note I have an Irish passport but my wife doesn’t, we are based in the U.K. do we have to abide by the same rules or do the authorities just not enforce it.

As I understand it :) -
I (a UK passport holder) must follow the applicable "90 in 180" days rule and my wife (an Irish/British co-citizen and Irish passport holder) follows the rules for EU citizens. At our entry to a Spanish port my passport was stamped on examination, hers was not (by the same official). Nothing was entered in my UK passport to note that I was travelling with my wife

You MAY hear or find advice that if both formally married partners are travelling together there is some concession - (how that could work or be applied - I do not know)

I would certainly not be comfortable with it - most especially if we had entered the EU together and I then tried to cross an EU border post (leaving the EU without her) having exceeded "90 in 180". It often happens that I leave the EU for a short time whilst she stays.

All of the above, stands for correction or explanation (that would be very welcome and is invited)

As I understand it once the non EU passport holder, be it spouse/partner is travelling with the EU passport partner the days are not counted towards the 90/180 but the non EU passport will be stamped at all times. You would have to keep proof of airline/ferry/eurotunnel tickets showing the same dates on the bookings for travel with EU passport holder. Once you travel alone on your non EU passport then the days are counted. Now how this is going to be policed is mind boggling but as usual I am sure it will be up to the individual to keep the paperwork for all their entry and exit days if challenged. It seems very cumbersome but it has to be happening all the time. It is just new for UK passport holders at the moment.

Thanks Redwoodsman and Bee for the information, we are coming over next week for six weeks, which will be 90 days in total since mid June. The next trip may depend on what happens at border control :-)

Dear Paul, Dear All,

Please note that, the above calculator is not the official Schengen calculator!

That calculator is the one “mostly miscalculating calculator!”
Here is the example;

Example of the wrong Schengen calculator

The official EU Schengen calculator;

Also the below Schengen calculator is the best easy to use and reliable one;
https://www.visa-calculator.com/

I hope this helps people..

Wish you all a Happy New Year
