There's almost certainly live cockroaches in the house - this is Spain after all.
Putting down poison bait containers an spraying around doors, windows, etc will help kill them as they enter. When you go away spray again, plus around the skirtings in each room (don't breathe in the spray, you'll feel unwell afterwards).
Putting plugs in sinks and taping over overflows will help stopping them coming out of the drains while you're away.

My spray is a huge red and black can called maton . . Labled cucarachas (cockroaches) & hormigas (ants) in most Chinos . . . Got it last year when I found 1 cockroach scuttling under vanity unit . . Gave it a spray and not seen any since . . Just use it for ants now . . .

Personally, I prefer to buy Baygon spray, rather than the stuff from chino shops. You can buy Baygon in supermarkets like Alcampo. You can also buy the Raid plastic poison traps there. These are small plastic containers that blend-in well with most stone couloured tile floors and last for 3 months. We put one in each room, or two in the bigger rooms and write the date on the bottom as a reminder of when to change them.

Cockroaches prefer dark, damp places, so leaving the blinds open a little when you go away will help to deter them.

Once, when we were staying in Thailand, I woke-up in the early hours with a cockroach crawling on my back - so yes, they will go anywhere. Having said that, we've only seen one cockroach indoors in Spain this year an that was in the process of dying, so the poison and spray seem to be doing their stuff.

Although the sprays seem to work, to an extent, the best treatment we've found is the Bayer Garden "Blattanex" Ultra Gel. It comes ini a syringe and you 'inject' a very small amount in the little gaps, where it suggest on the back of the packaging - mainly in the kitchen area, where you're not going to come into contact with it yourself. I believe it works on the principle that they digest the poison 'bait' return to the nest and die, then are eaten by the others, who also die - killing the nest. Mind you, my Thursday morning ritual, is to vacuum and mop the entire property, weekly - mopping with a combination of bleach, ammonia & pine disinfectant. This seems to have kept them at bay this year. Good Luck.

Have to agree with you Tony...We have gone back to basics. Exactly the same with that cleaning method and haven't seen any live ones or woken up to any dead ones in the bathroom for the first time in 5 years.

All tall red can called ORO. Spray all accesses to property and around skirting boards and go out for a few hours as it's bad to breathe in, but it's very effective and long lasting. also make sure there are no pots with water in them as this attracts them.

Rather than putting tape over the overflows you can buy vents that fit into the overflow and then they allow water to flow through but are too small for cockroaches to get out off. I use ZUM, expensive, very smelly but very good.
