Air con units
Air con units
by clegiewicz » Mon Jun 27, 2022 10:29 am
WE own a 3 bedroom apartment on La Florida. WE have just had a quote for 4 new aircon units. Not sure whether they will be enough to heat the apartment during the winter months??? Trying to reduce the energy costs, as the ones we have now are old.

What is the question?
If you want to reduce energy costs, running 4 x aircon units at once isn't the way to do it. And whether they're enough to heat your home really depends on the layout and the units being installed.

Depends on the size (BTU) of the units, whether they are inverter or not, how big your rooms are.
The chap installing the units would be the one to get advice from.
Obviously you won't have all of them on at the same time. If on a special tariff with the electricity company, just run them during the cheap hours.
But the best person for advice is the installer who will tell you if they are suitable for the size of your rooms.
Inverters are cheaper to run as they don't keep switching on and off but lower the power once it has heated up or cooled. They are also quieter.

To heat your home in the winter?
Air con will do the job but running 4 at once will not be a cheap way of doing it, but it depends on so many variables. Size of rooms, units to be installed and their consumption, what energy tariff you are on etc. If we guess that 4 x units will be using around 5kw +/- per hour, and if 1kw of energy costs 40+/- cents per hour, then that's 2e per hour to run. Only you can decide if that's doable for you.
Some people go for log burners which bang out a lot of heat for your buck, but i wouldn't go down that route personally as they will be banned in the future.

New units will be more efficient but I wouldn't replace working units, just replace them as they fail. Do check that the filters are clean, if unsure arrange for a service.
Do your current AC units warm your apartment OK? Ours are over 15 years old and work fine. Obviously new units will be slightly cheaper to operate but will take a fair bit of time to save money over the initial installation costs.
AC units are one of the most efficient ways of using electricity to heat your home. For every 1 Kw of energy taken by the unit up to 4 Kw of heat is provided.

I agree with previous person, change your units only when you have to. Ours are in 19 years. I changed one recently During the winter, It’s not cold during the day in Spain, only gets cold when the sun goes down. We turn ours on early before the room gets cold and find it very cosy. On occasion we subside it with an oil heater. I wouldn’t care what it cost to run the aircon in the summer as it makes my life bearable! When you consider what we spend at home on oil fired central heating and compare it to the amount it costs to use the inverter, it’s a no brainier. No tumble drier bills either. If you find it difficult to hear your lounge in the wintertime, check for draughts and install double glazing if necessary. Keep doors in the house/ apartment closed, have an electric blanket on your bed and install a tv in the room. Go to bed early and enjoy a movie or whatever you fancy. Put rugs onto the floors, a wall heater in the bathrooms. Use them sensibly but don’t do without heat or you’ll end up ill. I keep hats, scarves, coats and a umbrella for the odd occasions that they are necessary. The climate in Spain is usually wonderful but it has its moments ! Invest in decent slippers as tiles are cold in the winter. Oh, dressing gowns too.
Some people keep a good wool rug to put over their legs. Same as people always did years ago. Also, if planning to spend winter months in Spain, invest in pure wool/ cashmere sweaters. You’ll never be warm in acrylic!
I can’t believe we bought our house 20 years ago when I was only 52. We love it even more today as there are some wonderful restaurants and shops close by. No need for taxis at night.
Invest in internet and Netflix/ Amazon. Perfect for winter months.
I hope you have many years to enjoy your place. Sincere good wishes Rosemary.
