Are burglaries in ciudad quesada really a problem

I am afraid that, after 18 years in Quesada we were burgled last year despite having grills fitted throughout the property. We believe the thieves broke in during the day under the cover of nearby building work which was extremely noisy. They prised a grill out of the wall and ransacked the whole house. Grills are only a deterrent they will not stop a determined thief.

We are not in Quesada, but in Torrevieja. Neither the police, Guardia or forensics could work out how the daylight robbers got in. All doors, windows and rejas secured. There was no external damage visible. We can only surmise that they walked in through the open door when my husband was in the garden and I was in the bathroom getting ready to go out. They probably panicked when my husband walked back in and hid in a bedroom. Then when we went out, robbed us and left through the kitchen window, with our cash, TV and laptop. In some ways we were lucky. Our car keys lay on the table and the car was just outside.

They are, unfortunately, very clever at what they do and if they are determined they will get in somehow.
We were robbed in UK whilst we were here for a week. They had, somehow, popped the locks off a small, kitchen windon and climbed through. The window was the one above the main one and was only about 4 or 5 inches in height so how the heck they managed to squeeze through I've no idea. (Oh, and it took the police until the next day to come around after I'd reported it as they said they were busy at another incident in one of the villages. Had to tell the locksmith to hang fire until next day to replace the locks until they'd been. He also inserted an iron rod into the kitchen window which meant we were unable to open it afterwards.

Here we have stick on alarms on each of the windows which sound when the magnetic contact is broken. All very good if we are in but would be no good if we were out. As our main alarm box is inside the house I doubt if any of the neighbours would be able to hear it.

I read years ago that they lower children through those kind of windows then they open the door?

How were they able to leave thru the kitchen window if there were security grills fitted ?

I have a sign on the entrance to my property here in the UK that reads:

"Do not enter, trespassers will be shot.....any survivors will be shot again".

So, maybe a sign, something simple like a "beware of dog" sign might act as a deterent.

Some neighbours across the road from us had bars up at all tne windows except for a very small bathroom wjndow as they said nobody could get through it as its on the top balcony and its too small. How wrong could they be. One night, heard a noise, husband got up, went downstairs had a look around, grabbd a golf club, come upstairs, nothing, went for a pee and come face to face with a Moroccan hiding in the bathroom. He was pushed out the way he came in! Police were called and found him in the small park next door with a broken leg. There were 2 of them apparently, the other one got away. Apparently the one with the broken leg got sent back to Morocco. You do hear that if you injure an intruder you could be in setious trouble but nothing happenex to my neigjbours.

I was trying to gauge the current situation RE the number of burglaries in quesada and the surrounding area with my post. It seems that there was a problem last year but since a team of professional burglars were caught and locked up for 5 years last March there is not now a real issue as far as I can see. Criminals will find ways to steal in Spain the same in the UK even in the smallest communities. The feedback and posts are really appreciated but I would still be happy to move to quesada but take all the precautions possible to hope to avoid robberies etc as I would in England.Sorry to hear of the incidents posted though as they are obviously upsetting for anyone who has been a victim. Many Thanks

It is the only one without rejas as it is high above the ground, but does have internal glazing bars, security blind and was double locked. We had trouble with the insect screen springing up so my husband had fixed it in the down position. This must have confused the robber as he cut through the net. It was the only damage. The window had not been jemmied or 'jumped' , but merely opened.

So presumably the answer is to fit security grills on ALL the windows. That way if they get in, they can't get out.
