Bank account closures

Bank account closures

Postby harsuespain » Sun Sep 27, 2020 10:45 pm

Hi everyone,
Has anybody living in Spain, with UK bank accounts, been notified that their bank accounts will be closed on 31st December this year due to Brexit?

There has been a lot of speculation about this but I am a Spanish resident with UK bank accounts and I have not been notified, and Spain does not seem to be listed when this topic is raised. Could it be that Spain has made special arrangements with the UK?
Your views would be welcome.
Regards

Well I'm with Lloyd's TSB in the UK ...in fact their offering current accounts to Non UK eu residents. The criteria is that you dont have any other UK bank account plus obviously proof your resident here, in the form of Spanish driving licence or other documents with you Spanish address on.
TSB are owned by Sabadell

It's no longer Lloyds TSB. Lloyds and TSB are now separate banks.

I'd read that it would only affect business and retail accounts where their activities cross borders.

There is a saying ...there's no smoke without fire.

So let's hope that all those who prefer to think there isn't a problem that's going to effect them.....are right & the media and banks who have sent out letters are all wrong.

I have read a detailed article in one of the reputable UK national newspapers.

The problem is with the Banking licences. The UK has passed legislation that banks can continue as hitherto, but the EU as a block hasn't. So it is down to the legislation in individual member states, and also the banking licence situation of each UK bank. All banks are not structured business-wise in the same way so licences can differ from bank to bank. Where Spain stands the article didn't say. But it said that Barclays and Lloyds have decided to close accounts and have written to the clients affected. Barclaycard as well. NatWest is considering it's options.

If there is a Brexit deal after all the problem should go away.

I am with Natwest and have changed the address they have for me to my son's in the UK. I hope that will work.
