Barclays Bank

Barclays announced at Brexit time that there was a possibility that bank accounts for Spanish residents would be closed. However this did not happen as, I would imagine, Barclays applied for and received the appropriate license. Plus as I remember there is already a Barclays arm in Spain for commercial business, so in fact that did already have some kind of licence. Barclaycard accounts were closed however at that time. I am a Barclays account holder ahd have not had such an email. Please check with Barclays - this may be a scam. You can write to them from your online account page.

Not sure how switching to a bogus relatives address will work as they clearly know that he is not UK resident so it will be an obvious untruth and potentially attempted fraud by misrepresentation.
And they did notify him as stated in the post and he has until November to make alternative arrangements, before they close the account
Regarding your comment of bogus relative address and attempted fraud, my comment was to other posters that are currently doing the same "I wonder if I could do that" it would be approached by conversation with Barclays and not with any intention to quote you again "fraud by misrepresentation".
Why would you even assume that we would put ourselves in such a situation, you know what they say about people who assume things, that was a nasty statement to make Darro.

Thank you LizzyW56 will look into it today, expecially as you say they have the license in place.
Yes we had our Barclaycard account closed at the time and was told even with our Spanish address, (which we receive mail to from them at times) that as it was all in place before Brexit we could continue as we had been doing.
Something has changed or as you say possible scam.

It is not fraud nor illegal to use a family address in the UK for bank accounts.
Many people have homes in more than one country and some people don't own their own home anywhere and simply live with relatives.
The homeless in the UK are another example. They can hold bank accounts in other peoples homes, along with other financial matters. Completely above board.
Please do not speak nonsense and try to scare people.

I have had an U.K. account with HSBC for 10 years. They have my address in Spain and they send all the usual things to me here. It was opened when in U.K. so not sure if you can still open the same account. I believe there is the odd branch in Spain which in an emergency could be useful.

Isn't it to do with your residence? Homeless although no home are residents of the UK as are ones who wander around? It's the ones who are residents in Spain and have residencia?

Exactly.
It is a contractual matter between you and the bank, it is not a criminal matter. Yes, if you are resident in Spain, you are technically breaching your contract with them, but they are not losing any money so all they could do is cancel the contract and close the account.
