Christmas all the Spanish get on the beaches with their bbq's so me thinks not. If things get too hot there's a lot of water to cool things down. I am sure someone will have a sensible answer.

True!
But, I do think that people should have respect for our beaches and the environment in general, and be thoughtful about other beach users - including children.
While the OP may fully intend to do all of these things, I’m not sure that all BBQers would be so considerate. Similar to dogs being banned from some (most?) beaches because some owners don’t keep them under control and clear up after them.
Just my 2 cents worth.

My family and some friends decided to spend the day on the beach at Guardamar last May...we took our Cadac which is a very safe way of al fresco cooking....uses a small enclosed flame to heat a griddle pan using a small gas bottle...no charcoal or open flame....after half way through cooking the first batch of sausages two Gardia appeared and told us....NO BBQ.....
We tried to show the Gardia that it was not dangerous but they did not want to know !......however we got talking to some people later and they informed us that a nearby snack bar called the police on us while they were waiting for food....apparently the snack bars don’t like people cooking when that can buy food on the beach instead....!
It did spoil our day as our visitors had all brought food to be cooked and had hungry children with them...! We certainly didn’t buy food from the beach bar !

I think you'll find they are banned except for certain winter months and even then you are supposed to get a permit from the town hall.
Some areas have specific BBQ areas (like Recorral Park) but only in the winter months.

Fires of any sort, contained or not, are not permitted on the beach at any time.
They have turned a blind eye to the summer San Juan fiestas in the past, where everyone jumps over the bonfires, but they stopped most of those too last year.
The beaches need to be kept clean for their blue flag status, the health and safety of other beach users etc.
And although you may well not have any ashes to dispose of an would remove any rubbish etc, once someone was allowed, everyone would be having them and not be as careful as you.
Towns provide barbecue areas in their parks, providing special paelleros for free use etc.
