Best route from Calais to Quesada by car?

.we have tried 2 route to Calais in the last year because we have a dog. Both routes go through Barcelona to the border and throgh France
One route is Lyon Rheims to Calais. This is easy and we can leave Quesada at 9am and be at
Calais at 6pm next day.We stay overnight in Nimes and Calais and do not book.
The other route is to go to Montpellier and then through Paris. This is shorter in miles
but involves the ringroad around Paris which can be a problem. In winter snow can be a problem.
We stayed in hotel in Montpellier and Paris withoutbooking.
I always use the tolls because what you spend on tolls you save on petrol and overnight
stops. The easiest route is the ferry to Santander.

We always go the Chattres route from Calais and then turn off to Toulouse as it is mostly free on that route. Don't forget the straight down the middle route (Milau) involves two if not three mountain passes I think 3500 ft or so.
This Thursday leave home (UK)at 1630 Dover ferry at 1915 should be in Chattres very late that evening hotel booked. Leave at 0530 next day should be unloading in Spain late evening.

I have done the journey six times and used six different routes the best I believe is:
http://about-france.com/tourism/no-tolls-routes.htm
to J12 on A63 then D947 to Dax then Orthez
then D936 to Somport Tunnel
E7 to Jaca then Zaragoza
then A23 to Valencia & A 35 to Alicante area.
Last January I didn't use the tunnel but went around San Sebastion then A1 A15 to Pamplona then A21/N240 to Jaca then as above.
Bon Voyage

Be careful with the Somport tunnel from Pau as your sat nav could take you over the mountains as it is the shortest route, but with narrow roads & sharp bends with cattle drives & goat drives! Go from Pau to Oloron, then Jaca then on to Zaragoza. Pau to Quesada takes just taken us just under 10 1/2 hours with 6 loo breaks, 2 sandwich breaks, & 1 fuel break. Driving overnight will reward you with empty roads over the mountains, but beware, all the petrol stations are shut overnight, so make sure you start with a full tank!!
Hope this helps,
Dingbat
