Interesting. I will check my full policy wording. I don't recall residency being a question at the time I took out the most recent policy so I don't see how it's 'deception'.

They will not ask you as the assumption will be that you are a UK resident but if you look at the T&C's of any insurer it will very clearly state that you must be.

It's deception as you have a duty to disclose any and all facts which may affect an insurers risk, ignorance of the terms of a policy do not absolve you from that and the key phrase is, 'if in any doubt disclose'.

As I said, call your insurer if you dare!

My son has moved back to the UK and so far has a UK registered car and insured on a Spanish licence. He is also still on Spanish residency.

Other slight curve ball, if you are not using it much, why not look at a classic. Pre 81 no tax or MOT, but must be kept roadworthy. Also Classic insurance a fraction of the cost of a modern car with restricted mileage. Few electronic problems with limited engine management, No DPF's. Easy repair if needed.

There's no problem driving or getting insurance on an EU licence if you are a UK resident as long as the licence remains valid (usually until 70 years old). If he passed his test in the UK and intends to stay in the UK it's also free to change it back to a UK one should he wish to.

Just to conclude this thread in case anyone searches for similar in future.

I finally got round to contacting my UK car insurance broker (Swinton) and they confirmed that they only cover UK residents. I cancelled the policy I had and then used a specialist broker, Keith Michaels, who quickly got me insurance on my UK car as an 'expat'. The annual premium increased from £213 to £545. It is with Aviva. Website: http://www.keithmichaels.co.uk

Why don't you go on Facebook, find an English insurance company and message them and ask the question?
