Cancellation of insurance policy

Hi, is it normal/legal practice for insurance companies to deny a refund when cancelling a policy which was paid for upfront in full even though i gave plenty of notice?

I asked to be reimbursed for the months i did not use yet they say they will only give a refund if i take out another policy with them within a year!

Surely that can't be right, can it?

That is correct in Spain but some insurance companies will give refund most will only if you are taking out a new policy they are within their rights

It is fairly common practice in the UK too to be fair . . . . It depends on the wording of the financial part of your policy. For something like home insurance say, its generally called an Annual Policy and you pay (and are liable) for the whole year either up front or by monthly instalments and they specify no refunds if you choose to stop mid-term.
As above, many may refund part of it as goodwill but contractually you are liable.

I have my car insured through Jen Cunningham liberty seguros and they apparently are one of the few that reimburse unused insurance

Ask your supplier what the cancellation period is so you don't get caught out next time too. No refunds I'm afraid!

Buy law they dont have to refound you, if comercialy it is interesting for them because you have more insurances with them they will refound you.
