Cuckoo or Hoopoe

Cuckoo or Hoopoe

Postby AnneDC » Sat May 23, 2020 9:46 am

Does anyone know if the bird song that we hear very frequently is a hoopoe or a cuckoo? Sounds a bit like a cuckoo but I know there are a lot of hoopoes in Quesada. Thanks

Hoopoe. Loads round here at the moment. This one sits on next door's roof most days.

Hi...What a lovely picture posted of the Hoopoe. As started there are lots of these beautiful birds around at the moment. To my ear the Cuckoo has more of an rolling sound...the Hoopoe has a neat trick...it will go onto a house roof and locate itself near on on the top ridge tiles...then when it calls it places its beak against the ridge and thus an echo sound is made ...it actually amplifies its call. A couple of years ago I sat fascinated watching a Hoopoe doing the very thing I describe. Lots of Birds around at the moment.

Haven't heard the "hoop hoop hoop" call of the Hoopoe recently. There is definitely at least one Cuckoo around
the water park area. It's clear "cuck-oo, cuck-oo" call is clear as a bell and repeated often. It then flies to another
vantage point in the area and starts again.

I hear a Cuckoo and see one nearly every morning when I'm out walking, they are in this area every year in April/May. The Cuckoo's call is easily recognised and it you repeat the call back to it then there is a good chance it will come towards you. The Hoopoe's call is more like Hoop, Hoop, Hoop. You'll also see and hear Green Woodpeckers.

I lay in bed with my window open and listen to the cuckoo, up near Big Shopping, every day. There are Hoopoos around and Wood Pigeons too. The three make completely different sounds and all are good to have around.
