Damp walls
Damp walls
by Sue.jen » Fri Jan 20, 2017 11:52 am
We visit our holiday home here about every 6 weeks for a few days. I have tried leaving the blackout curtains open and closed. However, we are finding a considerable amount of damp behind the furniture. Beds feel damp and clothing items. We have several of the little humidifier catchers scattered around which are always full on our return. Can anyone recommend anything please.
Thanks sue

Do you use a portable gas heater when you are there?

We used to have similar problems so we got a dehumidifier and it worked a treat. We also had heating on too as that helps to dry it out. We have since moved and are now in a place that has insulation in all walls this has made a huge difference. We brought our small dehumidifier with us from the UK but it is a fisher paykel one.

It seems to be a big problem this year. Houses closed up due to the rather cold weather and the house being that bit warmer allows it to grow. Good ventilation, dehumidifier and so on. Our neighbour had the same thing when they visited after about 5 months of being away and one room (completely closed up) was affected. In a spray bottle, put about one third bleach to two thirds water and add a capful of concentrated disinfectant. Clears it a treat but you have to leave windows open to get rid of the smell and air the affected room out.

This proves why we should never close any internal doors or even wardrobe doors. Another tip as I said before is to move any sofas/ chairs and beds away when leaving the property so they are not touching the walls.

Sue.jen, when you leave your property, slightly crack open your windows, ( 1cm) and drop the security blinds, then take the pressure off the blinds so that you can just see daylight between the slats, leave all your doors open throughout the property (not the exterior ones though). This should be enough to solve your problem.
