There's been quite a lot about this in the media and the forthcoming tax on new diesel cars is a serious factor too:-

Is that 28% a definite thing? That'll put up prices in shops etc too as lorries and vans deliver the supplies to supermarkets.

reading the 2 links that Mike supplied, it looks like people will be hit twice, firstly by buying a diesel vehicle, then secondly by the increased fuel prices. Unfortunately, the main contributors to global pollution once again seem to be overlooked, (Industry) 3 countries whose industries belch out tons of dangerous gasses, USA, CHINA and RUSSIA, (other similar countries are available), all agree to tax joe public to death in their bid to battle pollution, but fail to force the real offenders to clean up their acts.

The article says that vehicles with CO2 emissions of over 120 will cost more from new. My Ford Focus diesel, for example, is registered as 105, so possibly a few other makes an models will escape the tax.

It’s the fuel duty element of the cost of a litre of diesel that may be increasing, not the whole cost of a litre of fuel.

According to this website and others:
https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/sites/taxation/files/resources/documents/taxation/excise_duties/energy_products/rates/excise_duties-part_ii_energy_products_en.pdf
the diesel fuel duty in Spain is currently €331 per 1000 litres of fuel, or €0.331 per litre.

A 28% increase would put this up to around €0.424 per litre, an increase 9.2 cents per litre.

I’m not clear if VAT @ 21% is then added to the duty - it certainly is added to the rest of the cost of the fuel. If it is added to the duty then it’s going to be something like an 11.2 cents per litre increase.

Sounds like a useful excuse for raising yet more in indirect taxes. I would guess 6/7 cars out of 10 in Spain are diesel, so this would raise a whole lot of extra revenue.
