Double knee replacement
Re: Double knee replacement

Hi,
I don't think anyone has mentioned a spinal anaesthetic which would be less stressful physically.
I've had both hips replaced seperately 2 and 4 years ago and at the age of 68 and 72 and both very successful can walk long distances and no pain whatsoever.
I think a lot would depend on the lady's physical well being,
and having a double op at an advanced age would be very testing for the op and for the recuperation.
If both my hips had been as equally bad, I would have had them done at the same time because the first week of recovery is not a ball in the park.
In her case, I would find the name of a good consultant with experience and pay if necessary for a 30 minute consultation.
The good news generally is that hip and knees are a very successful operation, moreso than every.
Good luck to the lady, but seek out an expert.

My Wife has her knee replaced last year at I med Elche on the NHS although a private Hospital, and is having the other knee done next week again at I Med on NHS, out here after you see the Surgeon at the NHS hospital if you haven't got a date for a Operation after 3 months you should get a letter offering you the option to go private if choose to do so , the treatment at I Med is first class, as it is at the NHS hospitals, but as someone else said when you are in pain all the time it can bring the relief of pain forward.

I had full knee replacement operations on both my knees in 2018 and 2019 roughly 4 months apart. I was told that there was at least a 2 year waiting list in the uk and as I had already suffered for some time before the diagnosis and I wanted to expedite as soon as possible. During my research I came across Nordorthopaedics in Lithuania. I contacted them and was given access to their closed facebook page which was very positive with real life videos and reports of people from all over UK, Ireland , Canada, Norway, Sweden and many more places undergoing surgery for knees and hips. The experience I had was amazing and professor Belickas did my operation with extremely good care and recuperation entailing a stay of 10 days or longer where you had a daily massge, wound check and light treatment, dressing change and physio. People were there of all ages but mainly elderly and many were accompanied by their partners. All the people I met from Ireland had been referred to Nordorthopaedics by their consultants as their waiting lists at that time was in excess of 4 years. After the operation you are transferred by taxi to a resort for your recuperation.
The operation is no walk in the park and you also have to be up to the flight out and back so not suitable for everyone.
I only needed the one operation in Lithuania as when I returned to UK extra funds had been found to clear the waiting lists and my second knee was done privately on the NHS. I would have returned for my second knee replacement if that had not been available. There is a link attached but for anyone thinking about this route I would advise them to definitely access the Facebook page and see for yourself.
For anyone that may decide to use Nordorthopaedics be careful when paying and only use details from phone call verification when making any payment as there were then and still are many scammers out there.

My wife is being assessed privately now for a knee replacement at Quiron
She cannot walk at the moment as the Hyaluronic Acid she had injected 2 years ago has worn off, the second one she had over the years, and an x ray showed she is now bone on bone with no cartilage left
She was meant to have it done just over 2 years ago but the pandemic hit
We went to the emergency dept there a few days ago as she was in so much pain and the doctor took an x ray and inserted a long needle in her kneecap to withdraw the fluid build up , a brown liquid and injected cortisone
But it made no difference , it is still too painful to walk on , i think the operation is the only answer now
But she is worried about the after care
I am here to help her obviously but she was traumatised many years ago when she had a hip replacement and was totally immobile and depended on help for everything

The poor woman. It sounds horrendous telmel. How does she put up with that pain. It would drive you insane. She will have to talk about her genuine fears with the Consultant. It sounds like she should have had a knee replacement years ago. Despite the problems she had after the hip replacement was she not glad she had the operation?

Yes B, she had the hip operation over 20 years ago and has never had a problem with it
She wants the operation now , it is the only option left, but she hates being dependent on anyone
When it is done hopefully it will help with other problems she has like weight gain due to thyroid problems and not being able to excercise

The hypothyroid on its own is enough to be trying to cope with. A horrible ailment. Never mind the knee problem to add to it. At least the knee will be sorted once she gets the op.
