driving licence,s

Postby GLASSMAN » Thu Aug 15, 2019 8:31 am

I Know this has been discussed many times, when one applies for a Spanish driving licence, and receives it, do you have to give up your uk licence,?if so how do you legally drive when back in the uk?is your Spanish licence acceptable to uk police if stopped when driving in the uk?if uk leaves EU,how can that be so,if your British licence wont be acceptable to Spanish authorities ,is that why uk licence holders are changing to Spanish or is there another reason?

And nobody yet knows the answer to that last bit.
Maybe you'll need an IDP but, then again, maybe you won't. After all, UK recognises many countries' licences and allow you to drive for up to 6 months (in some cases a year) without an IDP even on a non-EU licence.

And I don't believe that last bit, camionpilot. You can drive a Spanish car in Spain you own with a UK licence until it expires (if it's a photo one) and you can drive a UK car in UK you own on a Spanish licence until the photo licence expires or until you are 70, whichever comes first.

I think you are confusing a UK resident unable to drive a foreign plated car in UK and has nothing to do with the driving licence. Same as a Spanish resident shouldn't drive a UK plated car in Spain but can continue to use the UK driving licence.

Just remember, if you are driving on a foreign licence in any country and you lose it or it expires. you cannot renew it in the country you reside in.

The UK has said it will continue to recognise EU licences used by visitors to UK. Heres the latest guidance. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/driving-aft ... -in-the-eu

So Spanish licence recognised in UK. No sign yet of UK wanting an IDP as well, deal or no deal.

As far as I can see from reading all I have found, if you have a second home and second car in UK, no problem driving car on your Spanish licence. Much like current situation for UK licence holders with second home and car in Spain where they can drive on UK licence.

Just that UK licence will no longer be valid in Spain post a no deal Brexit (if you are a Spanish Resident) and if you don't change it now you might have to take a Spanish driving test. Visitors will be able to drive on a UK licence with some form of an IDP alongside it.

There seems to be some confusion regarding driving with a particular licence and exchanging it for another.

The basic problem with UK and Spain is that there is no agreement between them for an exchange of licences but that does not automatically mean that you cannot drive in either country on either licence.

Sorry, can you explain that? If there is no agreement between the countries for an exchange of licences, then how come many of us have changed our licences from a UK one to a Spanish one?
And the DVLA site states that, yes, you can drive on a Spanish (or any other EU country) licence for 3 years and then you can change it for a UK one.
In fact, apart from EU countries, you can also exchange a licence in UK from Hong Kong, Australia, Japan, S Korea and a dozen other countries simply by presenting your licence.
If there's no agreement, how can this happen?

And, as an aside, the Spanish government have issued a statement that holders of UK driving licences will be able to drive in Spain for a period of 9 months after the British withdrawal and, after that, UK licences will be valid for a period of 6 months after their entry into the country.
In other words, visitors will be allowed to drive in Spain on a UK licence for a period of up to 6 months. If, however, you are a resident or intend to be resident in Spain then you will have 9 months after UK leaves to change it.

UK Licence in Spain

Of course, things change. After all, the UK government under May promised that EU citizens going to UK would be entitled to use the NHS for 20 months after UK leaves (not EU citizens who are resident in Spain but visitors).
Boris repeated this and said it would stay the same although nothing has yet been put into law.
However, according to the UK press the NHS have now been told they will have to prepare to start charging EU citizens from the day after UK leaves and no 20 month grace period.
Anyone still believe politicians?

The only definite thing about Brexit is that, nothing yet is known about Brexit.

If indeed, it happens!
