My Dad did this for years and was extremely surprised when I told him he was not allowed to do so and there was no provision in the law to allow a uk resident to drive a foreign vehicle in the uk.

Similarly, you read of people who have bought Spanish registered cars in the uk and driven them back to Spain. Unless you had the car transported to the ferry terminal/Chunnel I don’t know how this could be done legally unless you employed the services of a non-uk resident to do that element of the drive.

It’s a pain in the arse to be honest but it is what it is. I think it might be correct that the authorities (police included) themselves may not be entirely sure of the laws around this but a bigger concern to me would be whether your insurance would be valid when you’re breaking the law by driving in that country.

Are we sure we are all singing from the same hymn sheet. There is no problem if you are a Spanish resident of whatever nationality taking your Spanish reg car to the UK or Ireland. The person asking the question is a resident of Ireland and wants to bring a Spanish plated car which they own back to Ireland temporarily. The only people who can answer that for definite is the Customs and Excise division of Revenue. I would hate for the poster to bring their car across and then have it seized. You only have 7 days to notify the VRT Section of NCT and make an appointment to have your vehicle inspected and it must be cleared within 30 days of its importation. Thanks Bohs Paul.

The OP confirmed he was a resident of Ireland.

As you say, if he were resident of Spain, driving his Spanish registered car back to Ireland = no problem. Conversely, driving an Irish registered vehicle would not be possible in Spain (as his place of residence).

As it is, his residency is Ireland, thus he can safely drive an Irish registered vehicle in Spain, but not a foreign registered vehicle in Ireland.

:text-lol: no the poster is in Spain on his holidays and wants to come home for a few bits and pieces in his Spanish owned car and then resume his holiday in Spain. I can't see the harm in it myself but Johnny law and Bob the taxman has different ideas we think until the poster gets the definitive answer and hopefully let us all know.

The original idea was to stop for example UK residents buying a car in Calais and driving it around the UK for free as there was very little collaboration between EU countries in the early days. There were some exceptions to that rule as a UK resident(working for a French company) you could drive a French registered company car(or a car leased to the French company) in the UK on a UK licence. That exemption may still be applicable today?
They were the days when my French colleagues came over here for a few months and did 100 mph on a Fireblade on the A40 past all the new early cameras and got away with it day after day.

No change there then.

Hi All

Thanks for all your comments

Bee I called the number you provided it was answered immediately and I spoke with the customs officer
He confirmed that if I was stopped beyond 30 days in Ireland I would receive a fine of 10% of the market value of the car

I think the rules do not cater for my requirements and are made to deal with the importation of the vehicle

I am going to call back tomorrow to see if I can get an email address of a supervisor / manager to see if I can get some relief based on the fact that I will have a return ticket and that I have proactively engaged

We live in hope

Regards All

Brian sorry to hear the news wasn't better but at least you will know you have taken it as far as you can. We are all waiting to see if there is anything in the rule book that can be used.

Sorry Brian but I think you'd be on a sticky wicket there. As you've said, it seems like they think you are importing the car into the country and re-registering it and can keep it for 30 days on Spanish plates.

The VRT Ireland clearly states the position on bringing a private car on foreign plates into Ireland and categorically states:
"The vehicle may not in any circumstances be driven by a State resident."
(A state person being someone who is resident in Ireland).

VRT Temporary Exemptions

If you were resident in Spain there would be no problem.
