Driving to Scotland via Calais return trip

Driving to Scotland via Calais return trip

Postby DimasArt » Mon Sep 27, 2021 4:27 pm

Following a successful drive to Russia we decided to drive to Scotland.
Not so easy to meet the UK English and Scottish regulations!
Armed with IMED negative test certificates I started to fill in the UK Passenger Location Forms on line and found it an arduous task as part way through it is necessary to order a 2 day test pack to be delivered to our hotel in Scotland (another 68 pounds each). The packs arrived the day before we left - seems a waste as we were out of the UK before the test would be completed - no mobile messages via the Passenger Location Form so I assume everything was OK

Crossing from Calais with DFDS was the easiest process yet - after showing our digital passports and Passenger Location Form we were simply waved through with no customs checks. On the return it was even easier as the French Police examined both National passports and Covid digital passports, Uk passport control gave us a quick once over then on to DFDS check in - we were 3 hours early but they put us on a ferry that was about to embark and even gave us meal vouchers for the restaurant. On landing we just drove straight through on the Green Channel without hinderance - it was great to be able to get on so quickly. No problems with Duty on anything.
On the way home we just followed the normal precautions - wearing masks where needed and hand sanitising everwhere. Another successful 3k km drive with lots of UK and French products.
It's great to be back home in Spain with lots of good memories to keep us going until the wander lust strikes again.

Sounds like another enjoyable trip.

I've driven from Glasgow to Torrevieja previously, and it was a fantastic experience over the Pyrenees especially.

This time I set the satnav for fastest route avoiding tolls. It took us down by Rouen, Orleans, Bordeaux, Orthez and through our favourite Pyrenees pass to Canfranc - it was a breeze!

We have tried many different routes through and over the Pyrenees but entering at Oloron St Marie up past Urdos and through the tunnel suits us best.

Yes I go this way every time, we do not fly, but drive every time, I go to Wales to see the family twice a year, and the tunnel suits us best, we only have a 2lt VW golf, this is the best car I have ever had, never let us down, what car did you drive to Russia in.

Our12yr old Mercedes E220DCI is heading towards 300,000km - it still returns 5.4L/100km (53mpg) the last computer reading records 5.3L/100km over 18,000km at an average speed of 84k/hr. Our trusted mechanic in Kinesia Motors keeps it in good order so no fears about long journeys. We decided to hang on to it after shelling out for all the expense of changes to have it registered here - so we'll keep it as long as it is drivable.

Before Covid we drove to Scotland regularly - 3 or 4 times a year also across Europe by Latvia and Moscow to Crimea. Covering around 25-30,000km a year. I've enjoyed a number of VW's and only got the Merc after retirement - I shied away from them eariler as I though the upkeep would be expensive but was very pleasantly surprised with the low running costs. The only issue is it is RH drive so I need to rely on my copilot for overtaking on single carriageways - that can be a bit tricky on Russian country roads.
