Hi we also had Mega problems yesterday with electricity tripping we managed to locate the socket that was causing the problem is Was The fan inside our logburner so I assume water came down chimney and shorted it. We got that problem sorted then found problems underneath the decking moved two planks and found we had got 17.5 inch of water!!

OK - thanks Pete !
I was referring to hard-wire. Some properties I have been in (Spain) it appears they run spurs from spurs, ok in a lighting circuit (as UK) but then not on a ring main (UK)
If all cicuits(Spain) are radial then I guess to run a socket from a socket spur is ok? (With correct guage cable)
I’ll seek confirmation from a spanish electrician and post any advice.
Thanks again.

A break in one segment of the ring main, or a bad connection at the back of one of the sockets, can easily result in the sockets still working, but the rated current of the wiring being exceeded (because the load isn’t balancing across both sides of the ring). As the user won’t be aware of this problem, because all the sockets still work, this problem will be undetected but can result in a fire caused by the wiring overheating.

The ring main was supposedly invented to deal with copper shortages after the war, but that’s a bit before my time.

I’ve also seen situations where a consumer unit has been converted from a single RCD to multiple RCD, but one leg of the ring has been put into one circuit, and the other into the second circuit. This should be picked-up when the electrician does this commissioning checks, but that doesn’t always happen.

So, radial systems are actually better, but it all depends on the implementation.

Pete.

Does anywhere in the world use ring mains apart from UK, Ireland and Cyprus? The latter two because of their British histories.
I know an American sparky I was talking to thought it was one of the most dangerous bits of wiring he'd come across although he did like our British 3 pin plugs which made it a bit safer.
