Flying Ferry

Flying Ferry

Postby Big Wheeler » Wed Jun 16, 2021 11:42 am

Latest proposal from Brittany Ferries for possible introduction in 2025.It looks like an aircraft but is part hydrofoil/part hovercraft. It is all electric with a range of around 180 miles and should carry about 150 passengers. It travels 6 times faster than a ferry on a cushion of air.Watch this space?
The Soviets had something similar several years ago but only one was ever made.

We have fond memories of the Princess Margaret hovercraft from Dover to Calais. I believe the craft is still around.

Yes Bee at Lee on Solent museum. I went on it, I think 1971 lol. I wondered what happened to it and her sister Princess Anne. Think Margaret was used as spares to update Princess Anne.

Hopefully if it happens it’s more successful then the jetfoil ran by B+I line (Irish ferries) out of Dublin in the early 80’s

I wonder about the Irish Sea too and the suitability of anything like these crafts due to how rough it can get. It doesn't mention vehicles. Not much point landing in Holyhead or Fishguard otherwise.

There used to be a jetfoil service from Ramsgate to Oostende when I lived in Belgium.Ok ish but not if you weren't a good sailor. It was prone to bounce about a bit on a slight swell.

That's pretty much why the jetfoil didn't last on the Dublin-Liverpool run , spent most of its time tied to the quay wall .
