Glass cutting

Glass cutting

Postby eaglet » Tue Oct 19, 2021 11:52 am

Hi,

Can anyone tell me of a local glass cutting company please. My patio table top has been broken so I'm looking for a replacement safety glass top cutting! I've tried the place near the cemetery in Benimar but all closed up and no signs to advise if/when re-opening,
Cheers

There’s one in Bigastro. I can’t remember the name of it off the top of my head, but if nobody comes up with anywhere closer, let me know, and I’ll find the details for you.

We got glass cut at Don de by the arches earlier this year. Did a really good job, seared and sealed it in the window and charged us €20? Great service prepared to do whatever you need.

Hi
Having had a glazing business years ago in the UK for a table top in glass it would need to be toughend and toughened glass can not be cut its made to size.

How can I tell if glass is toughened?

View the Glass Through Polarized Lenses

If you try to view tempered glass in sunlight with a polarized pair of sunglasses, you will see dark, shady spots or lines stretching across its surface–a prime indicator that the glass is toughened. These lines were formed by the machine rollers during the tempering process.Jul 28, 2016

Hi , yes I totally agree with Kevin . It has to be toughened [ not done in Spain ] or alternatively laminate. There is a process of reheating the glass , but not to completely toughen it ,by changing the molecular structure of the glass.
I believe there is a Spanish company in Barcelona that has started the true process , but would cost the earth. As Kevin says it has to be cut beforehand to size. Please check. I have spent 43 years in double glazing , and have purchased a lot of glass over here.......Paul Parkes.

Thanks for all who helped,
I finally bought a piece for my coffer table from Don De, cost €30, which I thought may have been a tad expensive, but I needed it. The salesperson told me you can tell it's laminated because if you look side/end on you can see it is 2 layers, Hope this last bit helps, and thanks again,

Yes laminated glass is two pieces of glass with a clear film in between and can be cut to size, when we used to cut laminated years ago we would cut both sides then pour meths on the cut set the meths alight and you would get a clean cut with no chips, probably done differently now, also toughed glass should have a stamp on it to say it is toughened, the weakest point of toughened is the corners drop it down on the corner and it will shatter.
