Hi I move out to Spain by end of the month all being well.
I play golf in the UK and have a membership at my local course,
What do most of the ex pats out here do join a club or just play in Societies?
If as a member what would the best course be to join?

There are many golf societies in the area. There will be 2-4 games a month and might cost about 37-50 euros a game including shared buggy. You can just play the games you want to.
I am also a member of a club in the U.K. and I don’t really believe courses in Spain run the same way. They will keep your handicap for you but do not offer much in he way of competitions. I may be wrong but I see their membership deals more like season tickets. I think the annual rates are around 2000 euros, which is more expensive than many UK clubs.
My advice would be to join a society to start with and then take it from there.

Really depends on how many times you intend to play a week, if you are going to play once a week then joining a society would be worth it as they will play numerous courses and get better rates, however if you play more than once a week then becoming a member of a club will be financially better. Yes membership is a lot more expensive than UK but the chances of the course being shut for bad weather is Remote. As for courses there many to chose from but if you want something local the best course is La Finca (my opinion) I would look to join a society in the club as they will get good tee times and will play regularly every week. You don’t mention your handicap but La Finca is a tough course.

The local course at Quesada is called La Marquesa which has recently been modified following last years floods. It is a good test of golf. One of the major societies that play there with competitions every Tuesday and Thursday is called Eurogolf, it has some 150 members.
Check out the website.

If you want to continue playing three times a week, you should join a club. Green fees are expensive, even with a society. It will cost you a minimum of €100 a week, over €5,000 a year.

This is true, if you play la Finca with La Cascada society based at la Finca Thursday and Sunday will cost min €100, to join La Finca around €2500 last time I inquired a while ago.
