How to apply for the new Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC)

How to apply for the new Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC)

Postby Alex » Mon Jan 04, 2021 4:11 pm

It looks like the new GHIC (Global health insurance card), that replaces the EHIC (if you have one of those then no need to apply for the new one it does the job) is now live on the NHS site on the following link:

https://nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/healthcare ... ance-card/

"A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in the EU.

The UK has reached an agreement on healthcare when visiting the EU.

You can continue to use an EHIC or get a provisional replacement certificate (PRC) if you need treatment and do not have a card.

If you apply for a card now, you'll get a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) instead of an EHIC. These pages and the application portal will still refer to EHIC until 4 January 2021.

You do not need to apply for a GHIC if you already have an EHIC. Your EHIC remains valid in the EU until it expires.

Beware of unofficial websites, which may charge if you apply through them. An EHIC or GHIC is free of charge."

No, not if you are a UK citizen.

:text-givemebeer: I was talking to Newcastle office yesterday, re S1. asked the same question.
I was told if you are a Spanish resident, then you must show your EHIC or global card with your copy of S1 to get treatment.
If you are planning to stay for a while in the uk, and have a rental agreement then you don’t need your EHIC. Expect to do paperwork to prove you have returned to Spain.I

I was under the impression, looking at the gov.uk website that the GHIC and EHIC are different cards. As an S1 holder I am entitled to a EHIC as I was resident in Spain before 31 Dec 2021, my newly issued in November EHIC is marked as such with the initials CRA on the card. As a EU resident it covers me for in more countries than the standard EHIC.
If I need medical treatment in the UK the information that came with the card clearly states that I just need to show a copy of my S1 form.

The GHIC card was only announced by the UK gov on 29 Dec and the applications opened on 4th Jan and you only need to apply for this when your old one expires, as per Alex’s post. Again as the number of countries you can use the case has been reduced, this will aut apply to your old EHIC and the new Union Jack GHIC card.

So if you are resident and have an S1 it’s the EHIC you need.

Sorry for my ignorance but what is an S1. My EHIC card has now run out and I am a resident of many years with a TIE.

If you are resident then your EHIC has been invalid since the time you became so therefore it's running out is immaterial.

The S1 is the form issued to UK pensioners which permits them to register for Spanish health care.

What health insurance did you provide when applying for your TIE?
