I confess the chart I put up was from FaceBook from a poster in the Canary Islands, so can't confirm it's authenticity.

This is the Email I received from Iberdrola about the new Tariffs
Thank you for your e-mail.

Consumption will differ in three periods:

- Peak period: with the highest price, from 10 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon and from 6 in the afternoon to 10 at night from Monday to Friday, excluding holidays.

- The flat period: a less expensive price from 8 to 10 hours, from 2 to 6 in the afternoon and from 10 to 12 at night.

- The peak and flat time periods move one hour forward in the Autonomous Cities of Ceuta and Melilla

- The valley period: with a reduced price, it includes night hours (from 0 am to 8 am) and all hours on Saturday and Sunday and national holidays.

We got that letter too but we don't have smart meters yet so they were advising of the installation and the different rates which can now be applied automatically for usage throughout the day in line with a Government directive. This comes into force on 1st June. It says the customer is not required to take any action.

Is this supposed to make it cheaper or more expensive overall? Or just more complicated just for the sake of it.

To be on a variable tariff, you have to be on a particular potencia. I was told by Iberdrola that you will also be able to adjust the potencia within the bandings, assuming you can raise it for super cheap band when you may want to use more, and lower when your demand will be less. Should filter through as savings maybe?

What happens when you're on a specific tariff, i.e. I'm on the 8 hour tariff and my cheap periods are 8am-1pm and 7pm-10pm. Do these new rules override these?

Iberdrola informed me that by July 1st all smart meters will have been changed to the new tariffs It will be done by electronic means no visits will be required so we will all go on to the new tariffs regardless what your contract says .
This is a Government order and all suppliers have to go by the new order.
