Identity Requirement

Do I have to carry my passport for id purposes or will my Spanish driving licence suffice.

Driving licence is sufficient.

Should be but ultimately it's going to depend on who's doing the asking !

I carry a photocopy of my passport and if that turns out to be not good enough then I'll regard seeing the inside of a cell at a police station as part of life's experience !

Ive been stopped twice once at the Arches roundabout and the other approaching departures at Alicante airport, on both occasions showing the the driving license was fine.

You can get an official copy Of a passport from a notary for about 10€

That's what I have but some places will not accept that. It has to be the original passport.

For 99% of things the shrunken credit card size passport is acceptable and very easy to carry, you can do this yourself and encapsulate it or the post room in Benimar can do this for you. It used to have to be stamped by the town hall but this is no longer necessary.

Yes I believe it is a legal requirement to carry photo identity at all times. However my stance is that I would rather be fined for not carrying it than carry it and lose it or have it stolen with all the expense and inconvenience that causes. My driving licence is accepted the majority if times but not 100%.
