A further endorsement for San Bartholome.

When you go for the first time you'll wonder why so many appear petrified at the prospect of doing it themselves.

There are even some who chuck their cars in before 4 years old just to avoid it!

A bit of feedback on an experience I had with the ITV sticker - don´t trust it! They also stamp your log book so always check that the log book and the sticker have the same date. I didn´t and found the sticker was incorrect and had been driving around for weeks with no ITV!

Do you have a link for booking online please?

No need to book just turn up and here's the procedure:-

I use the Almoradi / San Bartolome ITV station. Go during siesta as it is quieter.

Drive straight down beside the petrol pumps and back round the bottom. There are three lanes. Park on one of the stop lines, or behind another vehicle if there are any in front of you. Go into the office.

Paperwork needed:
Inspeccion Tecnica de Vehiculos & Permiso de Circulacion – loose, not in their folder
You don’t need SUMA, license, passport, padron etc.

At the counter hand over your paperwork and the fee - around 65€. They give you a receipt which you need to hand back when the test is finished.

Wait until you are called, so keep your window open. They may call you by name or by registration number, and they tell you which lane to go into.

Changed a little at San Bartolome. You stay in your car all the time now, including driving it onto the rolling road for brake testing and over the pit. Also the tester will issue you your sticker and endorse the test record, so you don't have to go back in the office. 52 eoros for a car now. The only tricky bit is trying to understand when they call your name or registration. Just pull forward as if it were your turn, they'll soon tell you if it is or not. Very impressed, but they're not half as thorough as the British MOT.

The tester tells you where to stop, takes vehicle details and a photo of the front of the car, gets you to open the bonnet for a look round – I was impressed that they even check the oil level. He then gets you to operate lights, horn, wipers and washers, and he checks seatbelts.

You then leave the car and move to the far end away from the test area whilst the tester checks exhaust emissions and brakes. Emission test is done at both low and high revs. They also record noise level.

He then drives it over the pit and you get back into the car. He goes down the pit and tells you to operate the brakes and then the steering, tells you to move it forward until he says stop, and you operate the brakes again. There’s a monitor beside your car where you can see pictures of the underside of the car when he uses his camera to scan it. They also rock the car about whilst they examine the suspension.

Then you move the car to the parking area, go back to the office and take a seat until they’ve processed your results. They call your name, you hand over the receipt, and they return your paperwork along with the test results and ITV sticker (if you’re lucky).

And they speak basic English too.
