Just as a matter of interest…..
Just as a matter of interest…..
by Mac3blade » Sat Nov 27, 2021 6:40 pm
My husband and I were chatting about the fact that as visitors here, we really don’t know what we would do if we contracted Covid while staying here.
Could we order groceries or medicines to be delivered? If diagnosed and became ill, would Hospital Quiron nurse us back to health or would we be obliged to go the Torrevieja Hospital? Listening to all the talk o TV about this new South African variant , who would we turn to for help? I did receive a message from the Valencianas communications providing a telephone number but once reported, is there any support offered? We both feel quite vulnerable which is natural. We dont have any neighbours that we could call upon for help….the language barrier doesn’t help either. Most of the people we would come into contact with aren’t in residence now.
Has anyone ever been hospitalised because of COVID? The fact that one or other of us would be isolated is frightening. My family have been hounding us all day to come home but we are happy to see a blue skies and no sign of autumn leaves on the pavements.
Do doctors here prescribe drugs for COVID patients? I know I must be coming across as neurotic but part of me is anxious.
Thank you all as ever for your help and advice.
Rosemary.

You are certainly not being neurotic, indeed you summarise a number of key important issues. But how to address those issues, well, who knows? Stay where you are, for however long you want, or travel home ( risking infection en route of course. ) Or, whatever.. Given that you are not a Spanish resident but a well seasoned, regular, visitor ( a YoYo I think, rather than a Swallow) you are someone who has already decided upon and accepted a certain degree of risk otherwise you wouldn't be in Spain right now at all. And yes you need to plan for all eventualities.

I would imagine you would use your EHIC card or the new one if you have it,probably at Torrevieja hospital,do you have travel insurance with covid cover,if you do they would give you advice where to go.We took a policy out with covid cover as a extra with Staysure insurance last June, but who knows what happens with insurance companies until you try to claim.

Yes, we have travel insurance and yes the new global health card but that’s not the issue. Many people who contract covid don’t become very ill so presumably they take paracetamol or similar. My fear is my husband has COPD and should his breathing become difficult would need to go to hospital and I wouldn’t be permitted to be with him. Or vice versa.
What about getting medicine from the local pharmacy? Is there a delivery service available? Which shops deliver groceries? Could we choose Hospital Quiron rather than the Torrevieja hospital? Surely somebody must know some person who had covid while staying on holiday.
I’m sure we won’t catch it but not knowing the route to take if it did happen concerns me.
Thank you all for your advice. You are all very kind. Our house is on the Spanish side of Torrevieja near La Mata but no English neighbours anywhere at all. Certainly if there are, we don’t know them!

Hi, all I can tell you is that our local Consume supermarket in Benimar Rojales does deliveries, but don’t know about others, someone on here must have had dealings with deliveries from chemists. The hospital question would surely be down to your insurance Co.Good luck with everything & take care.

The quiron is a great hospital and all English speaking but it is a private hospital so you need insurance or will have to pay although prices much better than English private hospitals but with covid expenses could be very high.

I would think R should you need to get to a hospital you would ring 112. They will then contact the emergency services. Probably a SAMU ambulance will arrive and take you to Torrevieja Hospital or Quiron. As regards shopping all the supermarkets do deliveries. You might need to sign up on line first. I know when we had family staying at our apartment without a car they got the nearby dialprix to deliver their groceries. As for medicines you could call the Farmacia and get them delivered by taxi. Wouldn't postal codes be very handy in situations like these. I see Quiron have a 24hr emergency department
