Large water bill

Large water bill

Postby Dmccutcheon » Sun Jul 24, 2016 9:27 am

anyone suddenly been charged a high amount for water ? .
I have cone over this time to a bill for over €2200 . My water in the house was turned off and I've checked I have no leak .

I'm pretty sure someone has taken over 750 units from my meter cupboard .
As it's unlocked it's so easy to do .
I suspect there are many and the water people don't want us to know

Did you turn the water off from the mains in the water cupboard?

We have a padlock on ours that the water company put on originally which helps stop any unauthorised tampering. It has been known for there to be a leak under the garden or house from the mains supply into the house.

Obviously you will have to check what's happened here but at the same time it could be worth going to the company and asking about a lock on your water door. Our near neighbours have the same key for their locks so the water company may be able to tell you what to do about this.

I know that doesn't help your immediate problem about the high bill. Hope you can find out what's happened there.

I sympathise with you, I had a similar situation, mine was a faulty irrigation controller that was stuck on for nearly a year, we only noticed the problem from our bank statements. I tried to claim back from council / water company, guess what......... No joy and to cap it, my garden was no better than our neighbors.

Yes but should turn off at meter, any leak after the meter is down to you as i found out the expensive way.

The important part is to complain in person to the water company. I had a friend who had a huge bill because he was being accused of tampering with the water supply (the neighbour's all know it was another person on the street). He visited the office and a negotiation started. Within a couple of weeks it had been reduced by 70% and, although he had to pay more than usual, they understood that it wasn't an intentional fault of his. Your lawyer may be able to do this for you, but it must be face to face st their offices to start a negotiation. Good luck
