Locks on doors

Locks on doors

Postby Chris21 » Tue Feb 12, 2019 3:20 pm

Hi, I would like to have one key that fits both my gate into the property and then the grill/gate at the front door. What is the best way to do this, can I buy 2 new locks with only 1 master key, or is there another method, and where is best to buy such locks. We can fit the locks ourselves if we can source such things. Thank you

I assume that the locks are Eurolocks?
You want “keyed alike” lock barrels, but, there’s a bit more to it than that.

Eurolocks come in different sizes - that is how much the part that you put your key into projects out from the door on each side. They also come in different finishes (brass, chrome etc).
There are also types that resist drilling, snapping and ‘bumping’ better than others.

I changed all the locks in our house shortly after when we moved in and went for one key that opens everything. On some doors I wanted thumb-turns on the inside so that they can be opened from inside without a key (for convenience and fire safety).
I ended-up ordering mine from a U.K. company called the handle store:
https://www.handlestore.com/locks/yale- ... o-cylinder
They have some good guides about how to measure your existing locks, and why anti snap and anti bump locks are important.

If you go to places like Leroy Merlin then they’ll sell some packs of keyed-alike cylinders and if you’re lucky then you’ll find something that fits your gate/door. Otherwise it will be a case of having the cylinders made, either from somewhere like the handles store, or by a local locksmith.

If you wnat to buy locally then I’d probably contact somebody like David Beck. He’ll pop around and take a look and probably be able to order what you want. You’ll probably be best to get him to fit them too, as it won’t cost very much if he’s coming around anyway.

Pete.

I would take the locks out , measure them then go and see the lads in the DIY shop at the back of the Consum . Sure they will be able to sort you out .

That’s where I bought my keyed alike locks.

But do take the lock barrel out and examine the cam, unlike in the UK where they are one length, I found that cams here are long or short

Go to any of the key cutting shops, and they have contact numbers who can do this for you. I had all mine done about 18 months ago by a guy called andy, and it only cost 65 euros for everything. Sorry I havent got his contact details to hand as I'm in the UK.

We had ours changed by a locksmith, cannot remember his name but he did not charge much, would have been more expensive to do it ourselves.

Hi, I used David Beck (recommended here) and I now use same key on door grill, front door etc. Very reasonable and super quick. I would highly recommend him.
