Try ringing a broker, I used to own a insurance brokers and you can get long stay travel insurance with P. J Hayman it really depends ind what your medical condition is and how old you are also if you want cover for your condition whilst in Spain £400 does not sound a lot of money although I don’t know what medical problems you have I am quite happy to put you in touch with my old brokers who would help.

I've just looked at their website and the maximum length of stay is 90 days. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Yes we have been in that situation but I have managed to get cover under £100 if you strip out all the non medical stuff. Google ‘ Medical Travel Compared’ site in the U.K. Go for single trip cover for the duration of the trip (I have annual as well for the shorter trips) . You will need to enter all your conditions and they will produce a list of insurers prepared to cover you and a range of policies at different prices.
There are companies out there at a reasonable price. Alternatively if that is viable for you get a cheap flight back to the U.K. for a few days and take out another policy to cover you for the second half of the trip.

Thanks Sylwina for the website details, I have just tried them and they quote from £894 to £1500!! We obviously have something they don't like to cover. It is definitely looking much cheaper to come back to the UK for the odd week in between.

Blimey! Age and the medical conditions are the critical factors but even so that is an obscene amount of money. It is some time ago since we went for 5 months, the last few times was for 3 months but I’m shocked it has got so expensive. If you decide to fly back, make sure you book your flights as soon as they are released - leave it a while and there is no such thing as a cheap summer flight! Hope you get something sorted.

I think it's age, medical conditions and length of time of the trip that is the killer. We are 62 and 65 and both are on medication for high blood pressure. My husband also has Peripheral Artery Disease and I have COPD, probably not helped by the fact we're both still smoking and both diseases are considered to be caused by smoking! What with that and wanting cover for 180 days seems to be a real no-no.

I've managed to get EHIC Plus to extend our cover to 120 days at a total cost of £114 for annual multi trip so I am going to take that up. It doesnt cover us for existing conditions but those should be covered by our EHIC cards, hopefully, but at least it will cover any unforeseen emergencies. We havent book return flights yet so will decide nearer the time whether to come home after 120 days and go back for a month in maybe May or whether to risk staying on uncovered. We'll have to see.

Thanks for all your help.
