New bike lanes.
by JakkiB » Sat Apr 27, 2024 4:23 pm
The new bike lanes that have been installed between the roundabout and Mercadona. Today, I was traveling towards the Mercadona and two bikes were coming toward me. They came rounds the roundabout ( going the wrong way round) and I had to break hard. I noticed the the lane they went into had a give way sign in it, which by the way it was painted looked like they were not allowed to go in that lane. Anyone else?

The new bike lanes may cause some confusion until people get used to them. The cycle lane alongside some of the roundabouts near us are 2 way so can look like you're cycling the wrong way.
I haven't seen the new ones near mercadona yet but thanks for the warning to be a little patient until everyone is used to it.

Personally I think it’s an accident waiting to happen all these years at roundabouts you don’t expect a cyclist to enter a roundabout the wrong way ( the right way now this law has come into force) drivers won’t be aware of the new bike lanes wait to hear the sirens on ambulances.

Why should different rules apply to cyclist and other road users? One rule for everybody makes far more sense. If everyone travels in one direction it must be safer.
A lot of roundabouts have 2 lanes. Imagine the chaos if everyone was allowed to go in both directions. Who has priority if 2 cyclists are traveling in opposite directions and one wants to exit crossing the path of the other.

These cycle lanes are an accident waiting to happen. The ones where the lanes are in the middle of the road are utter lunacy.
I wonder if some one has docked up in the council but afraid to admit they’ve made a mistake ?

Just another example of putting morons in charge who make stupid decisions to the detriment of society as a whole. I feel sorry for the cyclists who have no protection when being hit by a car.

Hold on!!..... You saw someone using a bike lane that was actually on a bike?.... Did you get any pics as proof?
On a serious note. I think as other people have said..... Its a serious accident waiting to happen. Turning into Calle Alicante (next to Chino), you can't see over your shoulder to see if anyone is coming. The same again when coming out of the service road past the Merca Benijófar (chino) and having to CROSS the cycle lane. It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever come across. The Spanish don't seem to have a clue about road safety. You only have to see where they put zebra crossings and communal waste bins (usually at junctions so you can't see past them for any oncoming traffic. There's part of the N332 dual carriageway near Guardamar where the central reservation has huge plants at the end of it where it meets the roundabout. You get to the roundabout and can't see any traffic coming around the roundabout because of the plants. It's absolutely ridiculous. It's no wonder all Spanish cars seem to be wrecked!

Looking at the numbers of scraped and dented cars when we first arrived, I thought they surely must sell the cars with the damage already present!
I now realise it’s predominantly the result of daily roundabout skirmishes and car park dings.

The cycle lanes are uni-directional and are marked denoting the correct side for travel. This makes good sense as it means that you only need one cycle lane, leaving more of the road for us car drivers.
