DNI is for Spanish nationals. Brits have an NIE.

It's to standardise the ID card throughout the EU. Everyone will have one the same type with just the country name different and the country code (eg ES for Spain) inside an EU flag.

Won't apply to non-EU citizens. Just means EU citizens will get the new style card when they renew their old one.

It's also an electronic DNI. You can carry it on your mobile instead of physically carrying the card.
It will include an electronic signature so you can use it to carry out any official aspects, such as tax, renewal of documents, obtain copies of birth certificates and so on. You can also check how many points you have left on your driving licence.

Like you can do with the cl@ve at the moment but without the nausea of applying for one. Simply get the new DNI e card and you verify with the chip on the card and a password.

It can be read either with a machine or remotely just like the bank cards you get now.

And, of course, you can travel anywhere in the Schengen area with it and no need for a passport.

Won't work in UK where people start petitions or hold demos in the street whenever the simple ID card is mentioned.

@marcliffe It because the English associate ID cards with totalitarianism. The last time the English had ID cards was WW2. The Europeans and especially the Spanish, have all lived under totalitarian regimes at some point, and had ID cards, so they don't see it as a big deal, whereas the English never have lived under totalitarianism (unless you count the Puritans and Cromwell) It's just part of what makes the English different to the average European.

Boris Johnson and his cronies are doing whatever they want whenever they want. Isn’t that a form of totalitarianism?

Virtually everybody in the UK has an identity card of some kind whether it's a driving liscence or medical card credit cards, so have never understood why ID cards are frowned upon, I still have mine from ww2. Think of all the fraud and NHS cheats it would stop
