NIE Number

You don't say, Montesinos Boy, which bank is asking: Spain or UK? If it's your Spanish bank asking and you're Non resident, it's probably related to the certificate that your bank has to provide to the Spanish government every two years.

If your UK bank is asking for your NIE or Tax reference number and your Spanish bank is asking for your National Insurance number, it would be in relation to the FATCA anti-tax evasion laws, originated in the USA and adopted by the EU in 2015. EU member states passed responsibility for collecting the data to their banking networks and the deadline for data collection was September 2017, but some banks are still playing catch up.

It is a Spanish Bank, and we are residents. We have lived here for 14 years.

I got a White one first but was told to go back a week later for the Green one , the white one was stamped I still have it but the green one is the only one that gets accepted

I wouldn't know if they said to go back a week later as I don't speak Spanish and our solicitor dealt with everything, although she didn't tell us we needed to go back. This was in December 2016 mind and a few others on here have said theirs is also white. I guess we'll only find out if we ever get asked for it.
