Outside walls
Outside walls

Wanting recommendations of how to treat outside yard walls. All the paint is bubbling off and there are so many bad patches been done under paint. Wondered about cottagram, or the stones on the bottom with paint above. Thinking it will be an ongoing issue but if we can make it last for a couple if years we'll be pleaded

Suggestion, might not be any good or it might be an ideal cure who can tell, if it’s flaking that much, pressure washer it all off. Let the ground dry over night and then just sweep it all up. Wall will be a clean new surface for new paint to stick to. Seen it to often where old flakes are just wire brushed off, then painted over, and it just looks a mess like it’s got cornflakes in it. So, pressure washer, blank new wall to go at. Just a suggestion.

Hi, We have just done our with a product called rehabilt fondo penetrate by Jotun which we got from a paint supplier. You clean the walls first, then paint this on as an undercoat. Seems to work, time will tell.

By the way this is under the wrong topic. Have a look at what others have done. Some of my neighbours had Cottagram and it looks terrible after a while because of the dirty brown rain. Putting Stones or tiles at the bottom does help. When dirt settles on the top and it rains it runs down the walls so think about that as well. Never paint on damp walls. It just flakes off. Janjan

You could paint it with Metallic Hammerite, it would last a couple of hudred years then, but at £15 a litre might be a tad expensive .....

Could there be damp behind the wall..?? If so, painting it will be a short term, and regular occurrence.

If these are just yard walls, they wont be very thick and any damp that's in them wont stay there too long in light of the hot months that are looming. My suggestion would also be to blast / scrape off as much of the affected areas as you can. Let this completely dry off (even for a couple of weeks) and then repaint, giving you a fresh base. Should look ok for a good while.
