Overheard at Local Council Meeting
Overheard at Local Council Meeting
by marcliff » Thu Mar 26, 2020 6:44 pm
The following was heard at a local council meeting. Due to the lockdown, only M Perez and A Lorca were in attendance and they sat at opposite ends of the table.
MP. The government has ordered a complete lockdown. Here we have many British residents who won't take kindly to it. How can we keep them happy.
AL. Well, they are British and are only really happy when they have something to grumble about or try and break rules.
MP. Yes, true. We already have only one person in a car or out walking to go to the shops. That should keep them grumbling and arguing about it for a long time. Of course, none of them will look at the Spanish papers so they can just put rumours back and forth.
AL. Yes, but that won't keep them down for long. Of course, we can announce the tobacco shop being open as an essential service.
MP. Good, that will be worth a few days of discussion.
AL. I know, let's send the odd couple of other foreign residents to the supermarket in pairs. Then they can moan about other nationalities breaking the rules.
MP. Oh, excellent. That will keep them moaning about the Brits trying to do the same thing as they will have a common enemy.
AL. Ooh, ooh, how about foreigners in twos in cars?
MP. We've already done that. They can't tell who's foreign or not so that won't keep them quiet for long.
AL, Well, here's some good news. Their Prince of Wales has caught it. I think at least 3 days of complaining about privilege and money talking should be relied on.
MP. Pity one of their celebrities on Strictly Dance on Ice with Britain's Talented Big Brother can't get it. It would be worth at least a week. Or even better, that Eastenders Street thing they have on telly. Great for 10 days.
AL. No, we have to think up other things. I know. As you know, you can only put rubbish into the communal bins between certain hours. Being British, they think these rules don't apply to them so let's put out a notice saying they must stick to the hours. Bound to get a few hot under the collar.
MP. Oh, yes. And why not tell them to leave the lids open? It will stop people getting infected by touching the bins, help the rubbish collectors to speed up their rounds but will give them something to moan about as they didn't think of it first so they will have the council to blame. And, of course, they will forget that it is usually them who put stuff by the side of the bins to attract rats but it will deflect their ire back on to the Spanish. That always gets them writing letters to The Times and signing it in green ink.
AL. Oh, yes, I like that one. Any other sensible ideas we can come up with?
MP. Well, we've already allowed builders and roadwork people to carry on working. That seems to, how do they say, get their dander up?
AL. Well, I think that's it for today. Next week's meeting will be held on computer conferencing so we can stay away from the centre of town. No, wait, we will have it in the council building. Then, when they see both of us coming in together they can really complain about the rules not applying to the Spanish.
MP. Wonderful. I think we might be pushing it if we come in the same car, though.
AL. Until next week, then.
