Pet Passport (Spain) - dog - rabies vaccination - frequency
Pet Passport (Spain) - dog - rabies vaccination - frequency
by Redwoodsman » Fri Jun 11, 2021 5:21 pm
We are intending to register our dog for an EU (Spanish) Pet Passport.
A factor against that has been our understanding (it may be an incorrect understanding) that the Spanish system requires a Spanish vet to administer a rabies vaccination annually.
(we know that in other EU countries [e.g. France] this can be up to every three years between vaccinations and that period had been our previous preference)
Does anyone have advice or comment on this matter, any alternatives or about connected info [e.g. blood titer tests]?
We have absolutely no hesitation about Spanish vets or veterinary care - overall it has been a good experience
Many thanks

We had our dogs vaccinated in the UK before we came to Spain. On their passport is the date the next vaccine is due ie 3 years. I thought that because we are in Spain that we might need to get them vaccinated after a year so we made an appointment with the vet. When the vet saw their passports she said no, it would be 3 years after the first vaccine but after the 3 years are up, while in Spain they will need to be vaccinated every year.

Are you sure about France. I am sure I read every year for the Rabies jab. The only country which was different was Belgium. It's the same vaccine - there is only one seemingly- but it is up to each country to decide how often it should be given. So whatever is written in your Pet Passport is acceptable to the authorities.

Ireneinveraray & Bee
...Thanks for the input
......- naturally, we will be taking the Spanish vet's advice - we are anticipating yearly vaccination after the UK vaccination expires next February

Our dog is French with a French passport and whilst in France had to have an annual rabies booster. Same here.

As far as I know the reason for the annual rabies booster in most European countries is because of the high incidence of rabies on the Continent. There are only a few EU countries where there is no rabies so they follow the 3yr cycle.

We are certainly not trying to avoid Spanish regulations (or argue with them) - and will readily comply - but slightly strange that, as said above, if your dog is already vaccinated on a 3yr cycle - the end date of that cycle will be accepted before re-vaccination is required.
Interestingly, in the UK, it was only after a titer test, nearly a year after his first Rabies vaccination, (the test was non-obligatory & expensive at over £100 from a "recognised" lab) - that we found out that our dog's vaccination had not "taken" (insufficient antibodies in the blood sample) - we were then told by the vet that "this happens in a number of cases, especially with young dogs" (our dog had been, effectively, unprotected for nearly a year).
We then paid for a second titer test to confirm his resistance antibodies after a new vaccination had been done.
Fortunately, titer tests are becoming less expensive and can now be done by some vets "in-house" (for us, the test was worthwhile).

If you are getting a Spanish passport for your dogs, the rabies vaccination has to be administered in Spain. It is yearly, unlike England. We have just got our dogs Spanish passports and we will just make sure we are here this time next year to get the rabies administered. If it gets done before it runs out you don't have to wait 21 days to take the dog to England, but, if it runs out first then before going back you need to wait 21 days.
When you get the passport make sure the vet completes it properly as we have had to go back as she did it wrong. On the Rabies vaccination page, the vaccination is marked, date of vaccine, when valid from (should be 21 days after vaccination) then valid until.

Hi when we registered Asbo we had to change his passport straight away and was told that it's a yearly thing his passport cost €17.00 and they combine the rabies jab with his booster jabs cost for both €45.00

I think France is the same as Spain and the vaccination is annual. I lived for 14 years inFrance and my dog was vaccinated annually.
