Pre OP Hip Replacement
Pre OP Hip Replacement
by LA MARINA LADY » Sun Aug 12, 2018 10:29 am
Can anyone give me some tips re pre op hip replacement surgery. I am really going through it at the moment with pain and indoors crawling round the furniture as can hardly put one foot in front of the other, sleeping in an armchair as the recliner is the right angle and the bed is too flat. Pain killers not much good as the pain is bone on bone and its clicking in and out, the pain is mainly in the groin.
I am sure they wouldn't put a dog through this, cant have the op till I've lost more weight, one stone down, but more to go.
Any tips from anyone would be gratefully received, keep telling myself this is only temporary and try to smile a lot. Thanks for reading this.

Be very careful about sleeping in a recliner on a regular basis.
Your legs should be level with, or above your heart for 6-8 hours per night to allow the fluids that gravitate to your legs to be redistributed around your body. Sleeping with your heart higher than your legs will result in swollen ankles and can also result in fluid on the lungs, leading to pneumonia. Diuretics aren’t the answer to swollen ankles, sleeping in a proper position is.
Have you tried sleeping in the bed with pillows or some other type of support under your lower legs, possibly with lateral support to prevent your hip from rotating into an uncomfortable position?
Do you have a summer frame to help you get around the house?
Pete.

Pete’s right your legs need to be elevated.
Are you able to get into a pool at all ?
Are you needing advice just about the pain or weight loss too or is that under control

Thank you both for your lovely replies, I am getting into the pool often which is the only place I get relief from pain because of the bouyancy. I didn't know about the heart and lung thing. I am under a consultant regarding my legs which are naturally big an heavy possibly because of a gene irregularity and by body does not retain fluid. I am trying very hard with my diet which also is difficult because of my legs. I think I am that desperate I was looking for practical types mainly by maybe someone who has gone through this. Thank you both so much again.

You could try putting a couple of pillows under your knee and try sleeping in your bed again.
I think that this would be more comfortable than trying to sleep in an armchair.

Thank you but it's my hip that's the problem not my knees I tried an 'A' pillow to prop me in the same position as my chair but it's not long before I slip down. Thank you for your input I do appreciate it.

I too am awaiting a hip replacement, 2 in fact and like you I’m bone on bone so know what your going through. I’m on Tramadol 3 times a day and try to sleep with a rolled up towel between my knees as the pain is terrible if you try to turn in bed. I assume your having the op here in Spain? On the brighter side I met the consultant last week at Torrevieja hospital which I’m told has a global high rate of excellence. The consultant told me the waiting time for the op is 4 to 5 months. Considerably better than the the several years in UK. I’m back at the hospital on the 20th for blood tests etc then will meet the consultant again. Happy to let you know how it all progresses

Thank you Ron for the reply, I sympathize like I said you wouldn't put a dog through this pain. Mine came on so quickly within the last two months. What I cant understand is they are insisting on weight loss but if I had a fall the op would have to be done straight away. Oh well just have to keep telling myself it's temporary. Good luck and god bless with yours.

Please persevere with your weight loss. It’s a double edged sword, you can’t exercise because of the pain, so you put on extra weight. I know it’s hard, but the pain relief after the op is unbelievable. I’ve had two back ops, and two hip ops. I now have my life back.
Be kind to yourself. I had crutches, a toilet lifter (helped immensely), I used a pillow between my knees in bed each night. I was on fentalyn patches, lyrica, tramador and paracetamol and sleeping tablets. I now take pain relief only if I’m doing something very strenuous.
Show the specialist that you are trying with losing weight and tell him how much pain you are in. Has he referred you tothe pain clinic? I had two strong injections into my back which helped a little. Good luck, I hope that things work out well for you and that you are soon walking about pain free.
