Question about roundabouts

Question about roundabouts

Postby Steve wilkins » Wed Apr 17, 2024 7:35 pm

I'm aware that under normal circumstances, one must use the RHL (right hand lane) when exiting a roundabout. I am also aware that you can approach a roundabout in the LHL if you are turning left, but still must always exit in the RHL. My question is this: If i am in the LHL (because of congestion) and want to go left, and also enter the roundabout first before another car, (who is wanting to go left but is in the RHL), what happens if that said driver speeds up and prevents me from leaving the roundabout in the RHL and causes a prang? I've looked for answers on the 332 website but yet to find a answer so far. Can anyone help with this, as i'm sure it must be a common occurrence. TIA.

The only reason I can see for there being a prang in this scenario is if you were to move into the RHL when it was unsafe to do so i.e. cars in the RHL have the right of way and therefore you would be causing the prang not the other driver. Normally you should go round again until you can get into the correct lane safely.

If you are in the inside lane on the roundabout you need to move to the outside lane at the minimum of the exit before the one you wish to take. If you cannot you have to go around again.

Crazy rule that. If you are on a busy roundabout like at the Quesada Arches you could be going round and round all day. The British rule is much safer - be in the inside lane until your turn off is the next one.

I think the left hand lane should be for going left or straight on if it's a duel carriageway. It seems suicidal to me to be in the right lane yet intending to go left. I know it's the rule here, but if i'm in the RHL to go left, the amount of times I've nearly had my left front wing taken off is too numerous to mention. It seems the way things are at the moment, right or left lane when going left is asking for trouble.

"I think the left hand lane should be for going left or straight on if it's a duel carriageway."

If it is a dual carrageway then if going straight on you should be in the nearside right lane

I think we’re all forgetting what’s set out in the Spanish rule book.

RULE #1 There are no rules!
RULE #2 Refer to rule 1

Regardless of where it is if another driver deliberately accelerates to twhart or interfere with your manoeuvre it's your responsibility to make a pontentially hazardous situation safe, or safer, if you can, not make it worse or a collision inevitable.

BTW, it's DUAL carriage way not DUEL, although in some circumstances that might be debatable!
