If you follow a few simple rules, and the tank is properly built, you should not need to have it emptied or cleaned. We have lived in houses with septic tank, both here and in UK, for the last 40 years so know a bit about them! The only time we had to get help was with our first tank in cornwall, a combination of our ignorance and poor construction led to problems.

You should only use white loo paper as it bio-degrades
better. Do not put Do not use bleach or bio laundry produces. We have always followed these rules and have not needed tanks emptied. Solids rot down liquid go through the soak away. Our present tank, we have been here 4 years, has not needed emptying. It works perfectly, so if it aint broke.....................

I have always thought the same about normal toilets - We have had occasional external blockages in our 'shared' sewage drainage system in the UK and when it has had to be cleared it's amazing what normal things can cause blockages - things like cotton wool, thick luxury toilet paper and hair (not to mention the abnormal items that should never be flushed down like babies nappies, baby wipes and other pads). These kind of things can build up over time.
We actually had an exploding manhole cover in our garden, which spewed sewage all over part of the garden and when we investigated, the sewage drainage to this manhole came from two houses behind us and had a backed-up blockage from there, with all the items mentioned above causing the blockage (cotton wool is one of the worst things as it swells up!).

It just endorses the points made above by themiddletons and seems obvious really that a septic tank system should be able to bio-degrade better if certain items aren't flushed down the loo.

One time I bought some 'luxury' thick toilet paper and after a while started to get blockages in the loo itself - After that I always now buy the white 'economy' toilet paper and have had no more problems. I do the same in Spain, even though we don't have septic tanks, as I'm not too confident of the drainage system out there.

haad a message re what tank we have and who built it. To both I am afraid the answer is no idea. We think its at leat 12 years old and was build by a local guy. I know rules may have changed now, and maybe you have to use those big preconstructed ones, you see them being moved to sites on lorry trailers sometimes. I will keep an eye out for any info on the subject and post here.

PS. Just want to say we have checked and the tank is not polluting in any way, would not want to damage the enviroment.
