I'm not sure about changing. My husband is thinking about changing to a TIE, but like you when the rush is over, as he also likes the idea of a photo ID card.

I'm inclined to stay with my green "permanente" residencia card which as I understand it is for life provided I don't leave the country for several years. As far as I know the TIE has to be renewed every few years (5 or 10 I'm not sure which) and goodness knows what hoops we may have to jump through then even though the initial changeover may be fairly easy.

I look at as a bit like Brexit, if you keep your green residency card you know that nothing will change. With a TIE you don't really have a clue what you might end up with.

The photo ID card would be a bonus though.

Your Spanish driving licence serves perfectly as proof of ID.

I always carry that and a shrunken copy of my passport plus a copy of my residencia, belt and braces in case of being stopped anywhere.

Is a driving licence acceptable when boarding a plane, I guess it might be for an internal Spanish flight but not external and I doubt whether a TIE would be either?

A Spanish Driving Licence may well be proof of identity under certain circumctances but it will not get you through Border Control,

From now on whenever I travel I will be taking my Residencia Certificate with me just in case there is another spike of Covid-19 and Spain closes its borders again.

It is ONLY your proof of Residencia, green A4 certificate, Residencia Card or the new TIE, together with your passport that will allow you to enter the country.

From next week (6/7/20) they will start giving appointments for Residencia issuing the new ID card TIE for UK nationals instead of the green card

The requirements for this (if changed) will be confirmed next week.
The old A4 green residency cards are still valid and there is no obligation to change it for the new TIE card. Your rights remain protected by the Withdrawal agreement.”

So if this is correct if you have a green card, nothing needs to be done, if you haven’t then you will get the new type of card.

Keep your money in your pockets..
It's not obligatory!

Hi Lisa,

I was at Alicante police station on Friday and when we got there they turned us away and explained that they are not doing any more residencies and all appointments are in process of being cancelled.

When I returned to the office and checked my emails, all the appointments that I had made, had then been cancelled. It appears that without any warning they are changing over to the T.I.E card, this what a possibility as of 2021 but they are bringing it forward. They said in due course the system will be updated with the relevant details. The workers do not know any more, they were just told to cancel the appointments due to changes and the T.I.E residency card will be the new process for British Citizens.

The T.IE residency card is the residency for Non Europeans which is an actual ID card and is valid for five years once issued. Hopefully soon they will announce the requirements needed to make the application. From what I understand the process is like the old residency that was abolished back in 2007 which means the application is done in parts.

1.) Application submitted with relevant paperwork

2.) Once approved, a letter of resolution is sent out

3.) Make appointment to do thumb print and request T.I.E residency card

4.) Collect T.I.E residency card (Tarjeta de identification de Extranjeros)
