Residencias SCAM SCAM
by David Stokes » Mon Sep 21, 2020 7:09 pm
I know of several people who have received letters from their "solicitors" telling them that they must change their green residencias for the new TIE, and offering to do it for them for a fee. There have been cases where €400 has been quoted for a task you can do yourself for €12. I suspect it is gestors doing this rather than fully fledged abogados.
IT IS A SCAM
Despite what you may have seen on Facebook, or have read in the content of solicitor's letters you have received, there is NO obligation for holders of the green residencia document to exchange for a TIE card either before or after 31st December 2020, and this has come from both the Spanish and British governments.
I have been told by an official source that I cannot name, that the respective governments are very concerned about this widespread scam on expats from UK.

Whilst it is true, currently, that there is no requirement to change from old style green residencia to the new TIE card we all know from experience that these rules can & do change frighteningly quickly & that is why many people (myself included) have chosen to do the exchange before the rules change in the future. This has nothing to do with a scaremongering letter/e-mail etc, it is my personal choice.
If your "official source" is correct in saying the respective governments are so concerned & there is no requirement to change, why then are they allowing us to inundate the foreigners office with an unnecessary task when they are already flooded out with new residencia applications ahead of Brexit.

Well I would have thought the reason for concern was blatantly obvious. You changed by personal choice. These people are being told lies as a means to extract money out of them. That's fraud in any language.

I expect it has, but letters are going out in a big way now and it doesn't hurt to flag it up again. I don't want people of modest incomes losing money to scammers.

I still say if the government didn't allow this "unnecessary" exchange to take place, these unscrupulous "lawyers" wouldn't be able to scam people, end of!!!!!

You make a fair point but that's for another thread.
The fact is they are scamming people, and that is the point of this thread and all I want to highlight.

I have my TIE and when I was in Alicante I was told by the very nice man dealing with my application that it is very advisable to get this document before the end of the year. 4 weeks later I collected it at a different location in Alicante. Easy.
400€ I agree is a lot of money and I'm sure there are lawyers and other companies out there much cheaper but if you want an easy life, to be taken to Alicante twice and returned, to have your appointments made for you, to have a translator and finally your TIE and you want this for 12€? You've got to look at the big picture! These companies as are all, are in business to make money, they will promote their services and wares of course. If you don't want their service or their goods then don't contract or buy them.
