Securing a pergola to a tiled roof terrace

Securing a pergola to a tiled roof terrace

Postby Roach » Sat Aug 11, 2018 2:41 pm

I have seen various metal frame or wood pergolas for sale in the likes of carrefour or leroy merlin etc but how would you attach it securely to a tiled roof terrace? Would bolting it somehow to the floor damage the roof lining and present a risk of the rain getting in?

I have thought about heavy concrete weights to weigh it down but don't know where to get them and i'm unsure if they would be up to the job with the high winds etc.

Any advice appreciated.

I think you will find all the Toldos about, are bolted onto the Tiled Roof Terraces. Ours was and I've never heard of there being any trouble with leaky roofs. The roofs are probably concreted. Only surmising.

We have a 3 x 3 m wooden pergola and secured the 4 metal floor plates with silicone. Has held up brilliantly.

You can do it but you will penetrate the membrane which is never a good idea, if you had an insurance claim they would probably use this as an excuse to get out of any claim. If you do it use a quality silicon sealant and plenty of it in the holes and under whatever is being bolted down.

It depends on the type of pergola, the design of your roof terrace and how good a fit the pergola is to the dimensions of your roof.

I’d never bolt a pergola base to the tiles on the roof terrace, it’s bound to let water in at some point.

I’d either bolt through the legs to a nearby wall, maybe with some packing If there’s an overhanging coping stone on top of the wall, or make some concrete weights for the legs. You could easily make the weights by getting a bag of pre-mixed concrete (usually called Postcrete in the U.K.) and making a mould out of wood, or using an old plastic bucket, box etc. Once it’s done you could paint the concrete to blend in, or disguise it in some other way. Don’t underestimate how much weight you’ll need to prevent a gazebo with a canvas roof from taking off in strong winds.

Pete.

This is a great solution that works without making any holes.

I think attaching it to the walls would be better than having concrete or other weights, not only because of aesthetic and space reasons but how do you know what amount of weight will keep it on the roof when the covers are on it?
